Poor Law Records - Anthony HART (General)
Good Afternoon
My name is Geoff Kaye and i am researching for my Wife who has HART Ancestry mainly based in the Ross-On-Wye area of Herefordshire.
We are trying to prove the Birth Place of ANTHONY HART , who died in Ross 1836
There does not seem to be any logical Baptism Records in Herefordshire but there are a couple of possibilities in Gloucestershire. 1768 Westbury on Severn or 1774 Longhope, but we are having difficulty confirming if either of these are valid.
One thought we have is to check out if Poor Law Records for the areas concerned exist which could help us.
If there is anyone either familiar with such records or alternatively researching the same branch of the HART family, we would appreciate any possible assistance
Thanks and Regards
Geoff Kaye
Poor Law Records
I think the County Records offices do have them. They can be invaluable. They certainly filled in some blanks for my family in the 18th Century. Of course not everyone had need to claim on the parish, but any whichway they should be consulted.

Have you seen this excellent & very recently revamped website ?.
Link is to the "Records Archives" page, hope it helps.

This is the Ross page, re Records it states they're held at
"Herefordshire Record Office, Harold Street, Hereford HR1 2QX. Very few records survive — Relief order books (1915-24); etc." Still worth a try though.

Poor Law Records
Hi Jeff
Yes this is the correct entry, which we already had previously. The problem is no age stated and therefore makes it difficult to have a stab at his birth year.
My hunch is between 2 possibilities: 1. Westbury on Severn 1768, Longhope 1774
but without any real way right now of proving it. We are thinking of visiting St,Mary's Churchyard in Ross and searching for Anthony's grave, as maybe his age is on there grave.
Best regards

According to a thread on another site a ANTHONY HART married ANN ASHPLEY in 1795 at St. Peters Hereford and had four children baptised at Ross.
Is this he?

Anthony HART and Ann ASHPLEY
The above couple were married in Hereford 1795. I am trying to ascertain
where Anthony came from . My belief is that he was born in 1774 Longhope, Gloucestershire before firstly going to Hereford and then to Ross On Wye by 1806. The rest of their family were then born in Ross On Wye.
It is possible however that he and Ann went back to Longhope around 1800 as there is an ANN baptised in Longhope 1803 to Anthony and Ann Hart. Also a Sarah 1800 but parents Anthony and Sarah( someone previously suggested that mother Sarah was an error especially as there is no record of a marriage)
Unfortunately Anthony's death record in 1836 Ross does not state his age .
Has anyone any creative ideas how to be sure where Anthony was born?
Thanks for Any Help
Best regards
Geoff

Have you looked for a headstone (or a MI) to ascertain his age at death?

Not that I can add much here, but Anthony Hart is my 1st cousin 6 times removed. Our common ancestors
Our common ancestors are Anthony Hart 1704 and Margaret Blewett 1710. The Blewett family are believed to be originally from Cornwall
