Location of Ore (or Orr) Pool Newland (General)
Can someone with local knowledge please tell me where Ore Pool Newland is. I cannot find it on google earth or google search or on my modern or my 1830 map. One of my relatives Thomas MILES lived there in 1873.
Thanks, Peter I

Thomas Miles at Orrpool Newland
My GGGrandfather, John Miles (1823-1891) had a brother Thomas born 1821/2 and so I wonder if this is your Thomas; do you know if his parents were William and Ann?

I have not been able to fine hard facts about my Thomas Miles' birth so I am most interested in your John Miles' brother Thomas. The wedding certificate of our Thomas Miles dated 1850 tells us that he was married at the Doward Chapel and that his father was William Miles a farmer. In the 1841 census there is a William and Phebe Miles farming near Coleford and I have assumed that they were Thomas' parents. Their son Thomas was 13 which gives a birth date of about 1826 or 1827. Later census records tell us that Thomas was born at Hewelsfield but the age calculated from these later records are not a good fit with 1826/1827 date but are a good fit with the estimated birth date for your ancestor John Miles brother Thomas of 1821/2. Do you have a birth record for Thomas? I would certainly love to see it. I have summarised the information I have about our many Forest of Dean ancestors on the FOD website under Home Page/Documents and Articles/Miscellaneous Documents/Mary Evans Ancestors and Tree if you are interested. But perhaps some revision is going to be required! Thanks Peter I

Sorry but it seems we are not in the same family. My Thomas and John Miles were colliers at Lane end, like their father William who died before the 1841 census, which shows them living with their widowed mother Ann, still at Lane End.
Perhaps the farming Miles family you have may link with my coal miners further back?
