John TINGLE d. 1875 Gloucestershre Lunatic Asylum (General)
Sorry for the delay in replying to this, but I think that you will find that prior to 1883, the County of Gloucester Lunatic Asylum was located in Horton Road, Wotton. There are photographs and a history of the asylum available on the web.
My own gg grandfather died there (exhaustion and melancholia) in 1882, before the new site opened. Since JT died seven year earlier I think it's probably safe to assume he died at Wotton. If you search the forum index you will find Slowhands gave a nice overview of the Asylum in the past. http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=14551
I know I found my gg grandfather there in the 1881 census. http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?mode=entry&id=28470
The design, chapel and location of the Asylum were quite reassuring. I had originally thought of it as a grim, dismal Victorian pile, but a great deal of thought went into creating an attractive and reassuring setting for the patients, or "inmates" as they were previously known.
