Samuel Marks born 1888 (General)

by unknown, Sunday, September 04, 2011, 11:22 (4882 days ago)

Hello im researching my great grandfather Samuel Geoffrey Marks born 1888..... im not sure where he was born but i know he lived and worked in Lydbrook around 1920 to 1931. He worked in the colliery as a timberman in 1925 and also worked as a Bookmakers Agent in Goodrich / Lydbrook until 1931 when he committed suicide. He had two children to a Gertrude Roberts who was a barmaid in a pub in lydbrook.

Does anyone know if the are any archived newspapers from this region ? i maybe able to find more out about him, as the suicide would have been in local press. Im struggling to find anything about him and would appreciate any advice....

Thanks

The BMD death indexes lists a Samuel G. Marks as died Birmingham North, Warwickshire 1931 Q3 vol. 6D page 397. His age is given as 43, so born about 1888 as stated. There are no Samuel Marks listed as died in the Forest of Dean area registry districts in 1931 + or - 1 year. So it would appear he died in the Birmingham area?

Hello Harry

Yes i have the death cert but unfortunately it doesn't give to much detail. I believe the suicide (cutting of throat - stated in death cert, still happened around Lydbrook but the body was taken to north Birmingham for the coroners report. His working address on the cert was "the old house, welsh wicnor, goodrich , herefordshire"

Do you know of any newspaper archives for this area? Thanks for you help......

The report on the inquest into the death of Samuel Marks was published in the Dean Forest Mercury on Friday September 18 1931. Have contacted reedyspur direct and will pass on a scan of the report from the microfilm archive at Cinderford Library.

Hello Slowhands

Thanks for the details. I can now confirm a few things.

-He died in 1931 aged 43 - birth 1880
-His children were the ones you found Mary, Geoffrey and Dennis.
-Mary / my gan suffered a horrendous dog bite to the face exposing her skull and eye....She had to be carried to a doctors which was some way in Samuels arms. Samuel never recovered from this and took his own life in 1931 up in Birmingham.
-Going by an article from Harrybrook in the dean forest mercury "he was believed to be native to birmingham".
-Funeral at Witton Cemetery.

Again thank you all for your help, its a little tricky to carry out some of the research as i now live in Australia.

Witton Cemetery has precise records on who is buried there and you have enough information to get a precise result. http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/witton-cemetery

Drop them a line at: e-mail: wittoncem AT birmingham.gov.uk, stating the name and year of death of the person you seek and they might be able to tell you the grave number and its location within the cemetery.

Hi would anybody be able to research the forest dean Mercury concerning my Grans dog attack in 1930/31. It was a bad attack and it went the court for damages.
It happened in the Lydbrook area and her name was Mary Gertrude Marks, she would have been around 5 years old and i believe it was a neighbours dog. Im also curious to know if there were any articles concerning the court case.

Any help would be fantastic.....
