Can anyone confirm this? Or tell me I have the wrong people. Thomas Meek baptised 2 Oct 1808 in Weston under Penyard, it only gives his mothers name as Elizabeth Meek, and it looks likely that she was the daughter of George and Elizabeth Meek baptised 3 June 1787 Ruardean. There are a few Elizabeth Meeks, and Thomas's, but as Thomas and his family are in Weston in 1841 I stayed local. Thomas married Ann Ennis.
It seems that many people in the area became Mormons, and following a bad year in 1865 when people were dropping like flies, the survivors headed for Utah. Ann Ennis's sister Jane (Smith)who was widowed was packed off to Utah years earlier with her 3 children and her mother, it was costing £50 a year to keep them on Parish relief, so it was seen as saving money to pay a one off £50 for clothing and their passage to the US.
Don't go to too much trouble with this as both families are sidelines from my Rogers family. But if you have a member of your family who disappears from census in this area around 1855-70, then they might be in Utah.
