Domestic servants (General)
Two of my aunts were in domestic service between 1922-1927 in Gloucestershire, possibly in the Forest of Dean. I'm told they worked at different estates in the area, but I do not have the names of the residences. I know census records only go as far as 1911, but can anyone suggest where I could search by their names as to what family they would have resided with?
Many thanks
Nan

My mother though born and bred in the Forest of Dean was in Domestic Service at Flaxley Abbey home to Lord and Lady Crawley Bovey. I know that a book's been written about Flaxley and the Crawley Bovey family it might be a good starting point for you. The other place that I thought of is Bathurst Park in Lydney. Merry Christmas and Happy hunting.

Thank you and think it would be a great start. Happy holidays to you as well.

Two other places around the Forest worth looking into for domestic servants are Clanna near Alvington (the Marling family) and Oaklands Park near Blakeney (the Crawshaw family) but very often in the "upstairs downstairs" of times past many households had at least a maid. Girls also often travelled a long way to get such work. In 1911 my grandmother from Lydney was a domestic servant to a family who ran a sweet shop in Ross-on-Wye, and shortly before that two members of the Turley family from Viney Hill seem to have been similarly employed in Lancashire.

Tank you so much; are you related to the Turleys?

Banalban, I'm only very distantly related to the Turleys. My great-great-grandfather Richard Sterry had a sister called Mary Ann who married a Turley.
