Robert Varey son of John Varey (General)

by jk2211 @, Saturday, January 05, 2013, 05:14 (4390 days ago)

Hello.

Would anyone know of the circa 1809 birth of Robert Varey, son of John Varey, in Monmouth.

I think they were itinerant as Varey seems to be a Lancashire/Yorkshire region name.

Robert married Jane Hool in Jan 1840 at St Mary's, Lancaster. They had a dtr Margaret b in Dec 1840.

The 3 appear along with a friend/colleague of Robert's, Samuel Gilbertson, also a Stone Mason, as was Robert, on the 1841 England census.

Robert and family with Samuel then emigrate to Geelong, Port Philip, New South Wales, Australia late 1841.

Any help gratefully received.

Why do you suspect / know he was from the Monmouth area ?

Is the Catholic baptism a clue - as most records here are Anglican / Methodist / Non Conformist?

The actual copy marriage certificate is on Ancestry - Lancashire Marriages

parents occupation:

John VAREY, labourer
William HOOL, butcher

witnesses to the wedding were: John HARRISON and John BECKETT

----

On the 1841 census the family say they were not born in the County

????

But again on Ancestry actual copy baptism entry - a Jane HOOL was christened 5 February 1815 - born 9 December 1814 - parents: William (occupation Sadler) - and Margaret.

Again on Ancestry - Lancashire marriages

William HOOL married Margaret TYRER - 11 January 1812 at Lancaster St Mary

Looking at messages on Rootschat - in Robert Garnet VAREY's death notice in Austrlia 1855 - it states he was from Monmouth. Perhaps if you could put this 'notice' on this forum - this may be useful. Also the fact Robert appears to have a middle family name.

There is a John VARNEY buried at Lydney -26 July 1850 age 75 at Newent - and looking at my Glos. CD's there are various possible spellings of the surname, i.e VARNAY/VARNEY etc.

Is it possible that the Monmouth referred to is a street rather than a Town ?

Brock Street, Friar St and Nelson St / Monmouth St are very close intersecting street in central Lancaster
