Hi all this is just a continuation of my previous thread..sorry to congest the forum! To sum everything up I'm looking for any information related to Henry Powell and Ether Beach including their children and parents. A few of you have been kind enough to provide me with information regarding their marriage, birth, death, etc and it looks as though we've found some information regarding their fathers (at least their names). If anyone finds anything just let me know and if you want some information, I have a fair amount on their children. Thanks a bunch! Previous Thread on Henry and Esther

Sorry about that. I should have clarified. I have a fair amount of information on Milson Powell, their son (my great great grandfather). So any information regarding his siblings is what I was getting at when I mentioned children. Sorry about that.
All I know about Milson was he was a coal miner who moved to LaSalle, Illinois (not far from Chicago) to mine coal in the States. He met my great great grandmother, Hannah Maria Tennant Gascoyne, whose parents were from Dronfield, Derbyshire. I only found out that Milson's parents were Henry Powell and Esther Beach via an Illinois Death Certificate. Therefore, I know nothing about his parents except for their names and a rough idea of when and where they lived.
We think Henry Powell was born in 1844 in Awre and died in 1910 in Pontypool. I've been told that his parents were John Powell and his mother was Caroline Bird, but I'm not confident on this and was looking for some help or maybe a different approach.
We think Esther Beach was born in 1850 in West Dean and died in 1900 in Westbury-on-Severn. We're pretty sure her parents were William Beach and Charlotte Milling. We think William was born in Newland in 1815 and died in 1891 in West Dean and we think Charlotte Milling was born in 1817 in Popes Hill and died in in 1883 somewhere in Monmouthshire.
I have some information past these people but its mostly educated guessing. Hopefully I didn't throw too many dates and names out there making things confusing. If you need anymore information from me just let me know but I've pretty much provided everything I know with any degree of certainty. I have pictures of Henry's death certificate and his and Esther's marriage certificate if you'd like to see them. Just let me know if you need anything. Thanks for the help.

UPDATE!!!
Hey guys. After some digging around on this site and Ancestry.com I got back to Job Beach and Elizabeth Hughes on the Beach side. Esther's parents were William Beach and Charlotte Milling. If anyone can help me with the Milling side that would be great. I know that his name is William Milling. Still having some difficulty on the Powell side though. I've seen Henry's parents being both James or John Powell and Caroline Bird as well as John Powell and Elizabeth White. However, this Henry seems to have been born in 1840 rather than 1844... so I don't really know which way to take this...any suggestions?

WOW. AWESOME. Thanks so much. Just a quick question though, the 1861 Census had Esther being 10 which would mean she was born in 1850 or so. On Henry and Esther's marriage certificate which was dated 1868 it had her listed as 20 years old. Therefore, there's a couple years gap in some of the documentation. Is this relatively common in some of the research you've done and documents you've seen? Thanks again for all of this everyone on this site has been great.

Hi Matt,
glad to see you're making progress.
Yes its VERY common for people's ages to vary. The age recorded on BMDs and Censuses was whatever the person stated at the time, based on what they thought was correct AND what they wanted others to believe... no cross-checking was done, no national/government etc databases in those days.
eg It wasn't considered "proper" for ladies to marry men too much younger than them. They'd often gain a year or two if marrying young, to gain respectability AND satisfy the Law. As ladies got old they often "lost" years on Census returns, eg 39 not 42 etc. Especially in the earlier Census' people's lives were not governed by calendar dates as they are nowadays, especially in agricultural areas where the seasons were key, so people genuinely lost track of their age & even precise birthday; it was only after the UK was covered by railways that Standard Time was adopted across the whole country, for example.
Also ages were recorded differently, less precisely, on some Censuses. This website has good guides to interprete the various Censuses.

This site has excellent guidelines including age at marriage and ordering BMD Certificates.

The birth certificate states she was born 26 May 1850. It appears that she was less than economical with the truth over her age on the marriage record.
In general terms it is not unusual to find that there are discrepancies in dates/ages. Differences can occur for a number of reasons. On the 1841 Census ages of people under 15 years were recorded as stated. People between 15 and 20 years were recorded as 15, people between 20 and 25 years were recorded as 20, etc. Also on all census returns the enumerator will enter what he hears or thinks he hears, the person giving the information may not know the age of the person:- e.g. Servants or lodgers. On death records again it depends who is giving the information; someone close to the deceased you would expect to be fairly accurate, however with someone dying alone the person recording the event may only be able to give an estimate.
