William JONES, Lydbrook innkeeper

by Jefff @, West London, Middlesex, Friday, September 13, 2013, 20:34 (4138 days ago) @ MPGriffiths

Hi Colleen,
as admin says I can confirm from much experience that finding a "William Jones" in Lydbrook is very easy, but finding "your" one amongst the many is not so easy !.

Apologies as I've recently lost all my research on this name & area, however I'm sure MPG's post shows the correct family ref Wm Sidney Jones b1874. The excellent Glos Pubs site shows a few Jones inn/pub keepers amongst the 20 pubs of Lydbrook, but only one William Jones. I can't give a direct link to the pub, but if you search that site for "Lydbrook" then page thro the 20 pubs listed to "Prince of Wales" there's a photo-history of this pub. William Sydney Jones is shown as landlord in 1891 Census, and a Mrs William Jones in 1903.
http://www.gloucestershirepubs.co.uk/AllGlosPubsDatabase/AllGlosPubs_view.php

The William Jones who MPG's post shows dies abt 1912 is, I think, the father of William Sydney Henry. William SH was born abt 1873 and registered at Monmouth like so many Lydbrook people were (not to be confused with William Sydney Henry Jones born and sadly buried in Cinderford in 1872, registered at Westbury).

Our William SH also died young, I think - there were an awful lot of William Jones in Lydbrook ! - from this site's PRs;

From this FoD site the 1879 Kelly's Trade Directory for Lydbrook lists "Jones William, beer retailer".
http://www.forest-of-dean.net/index.php/resources/kelly-s-directory-1879/65-lydbrook

The 1914 Edition includes the following Jones entries under Lydbrook:
"Jones, Alfred James, beer retailer, Upper Lydbrook"
"Jones, Frederick, Anchor Inn"
"Jones, William S, beer retailer"

The 1923 Edition includes:
"Jones, Alfred, beer retailer, Upper Lydbrook"
"Jones, Wm(Mrs), beer retailer, Hawsley"
"Jones, William T, beer retailer, Lower Lydbrook"

NB
Mrs Wm Jones at Hawsley may be the widow of William SH buried 1919 ?.
Alfred Jas Jones's pub was the Jovial Colliers, he was landlord from around 1895 until 1923 at least, in 1939 a John Jones was behind the bar. Despite it being in Upper Lydbrook it recently had to close due to severe flood damage.
The Anchor Inn is also still trading and is in Lower Lydbrook as the name suggests. After 1914 Frederick Jones moved to the Sawyers Arms Lydbrook.
The Prince of Wales ceased trading abt WW2 and is now a private house.

=======================

Re your query about the innkeeper term, yes traditionally an inn is effectively a pub(public drinking house/tavern) that offers accomodation for travellers whereas a public house/beerhouse does not. However I think such references in census' and directories etc may not always be precise and often depends on the whim/view of the individual in question, "innkeeper" perhaps sounds "better" than "landlord" ?. That said of course many rural pubs did have a guest room or two if only for occasional use.
This may help

Hi Colleen,
yes this is a great website and forum but only because of all the many people who contribute, thanks from them all for your kind words. Please consider making a small donation towards the site's upkeep.

Re the Glostershire Pubs website, yes it's difficult to print/copy from, altho perhaps not surprisingly as the site's owner has also written some books on the subject so is only protecting what must be years of hard research. You may want to lookup his books, altho of course they don't include all the pubs on the site. Otherwise I suggest you try what I have long-intended doing, write to the site's owner and ask to use or buy the relevant digital image, hopefully you could come to an agreement. Here is the contact details for the site owner, Geoff Sandles, good luck !.

William JONES/Sarah Ann SMITH?/HARDWICK

by miss coco @, Thursday, September 19, 2013, 18:34 (4132 days ago) @ MPGriffiths

William Jones and Charlotte Hardwick were my great-great grandparents. Their son Edwin Richard Jones was my great grandfather. After the deaths of William and Charlotte it seems the children were sent to live with various relatives nearby.

Edwin married Sarah Elizabeth Russell about 1871. They eventually had 11 children. Edwin came to the USA around 1881. Sarah and her brother Alfred Thomas Russell came over around 1883 with 6 of the Jones children, including my grandmother, Edith Louise Jones who was about 3 at the time. I have photos of my great grandparents taken shortly after they arrived here. In 1920 they returned to England for a visit around the time of their 50th wedding anniversary.

I have constructed a family tree for Edwin R. Jones going back to a William Jones (1745-1781) and would be interested to learn if I am on the right track.

Hi MPG,
definitely not a golfing day here, hope your weather is better !.

Re Sarah Russell's birth, GlosBMD has:

RUSSELL Sarah RUSSELL RUSSELL BAILEY 1853 Forest of Dean Monmouth, Coleford 10 11
http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/bmd/SimpleSearch.aspx

I strongly suspect the Census p.o.b should read Cannop, not your Cannock suggestion. This is situated on the same B4234 road which connects the old industrial centres of Parkend and Lydbrook.
http://www.fweb.org.uk/dean/towns/cannop.htm

Given her father's chemical manufacturing background, this fits in nicely with the Chemical works at Lydbrook and later at Cannop itself. The history of these sites is detailed in this prior thread

1851 Census, West Dean, Ecclesiastical District of Christchurch.... (which covers the area in Cannop Chemical WORKS) - assume this is where Samuel worked.

West Gloucester, Monmouth, Coleford

All that part of the Township of West Dean comprising the Perch and Buckholt Inclosures, Cannop Chemical Works, Vallett Level the North side of the Turnpike Road from Coleford to Little Dean, Coleford Lane End, Five Acres and New Thatch or Independent Pit.

Clump of inhabitants - - all named living in Canhope,(this is how it is spelt on the census) followed by Winston, Thatch Pit, and Bush Pit.

Yep, the Bush and Thatch mines are in the right general area within a mile or so, this site gives map references.
http://way-mark.co.uk/foresthaven/historic/hworklst.htm
This map shows the location of Thatch and Bush pits, nearer to Bicknor and Lydbrook (see Chemical Works top right).

This adjoining(eastwards) map shows the location of the pithead & surface buildings of the present-day Cannop, nowadays only the ponds survive.
http://www.lightmoor.co.uk/forestcoal/EastDean.html

Post WW2 "Cannop Colliery" was one of the handfull of working pits left in the Forest, it was one of the big nationalised NCB pits and worked until 1960. It's underground workings were very widespread.
See photo http://www.forest-of-dean.net/index.php/fod-variety-2

-------
The history of the various Chemical works in the Lydbrook/Cannop valleys is detailed in this article which mentions Samuel,
"In 1881 five chemical works produced a range of substances by distilling wood, including charcoal, pyroligneous acid, tar, and naphtha, and employed a total of c. 130 men. The oldest works, near Cannop bridge, were in use in 1835, and George Skipp, who manufactured lead acetate there in 1841, built similar works in the Oakwood valley near Bream in 1844. In 1854 the Oakwood factory belonged to Isaiah Trotter of Coleford. The Cannop factory later produced sulphuric acid and crushed charcoal for making lampblack. At the Upper Lydbrook works, established in 1857, Samuel Russell produced naphtha in 1859 and the Broadmoor works, built north of Cinderford by John and Thomas Powell c. 1864, later made lead acetate. In 1870 the firm of Chapman & Morgan operated the chemical works some way south of Whitecroft. S. M. Thomas took over the Lydbrook factory in the mid 1870s, acquired the Cannop and Oakwood works c. 1890, and sold them all in 1894 to Thomas Newcomen, who ceased operations at Oakwood and Cannop in 1900 and 1902 respectively. The Whitecroft works, which had closed by 1883, may have been in use again in the late 1880s and early 1890s and the Broadmoor works were abandoned before 1900. The Lydbrook factory, which also made foundry blackings, remained in use until c. 1933."

[Perhaps not related ?? to Samuel but the Russell brothers were important ironworkers in the industrial history of Lydbrook.]

The Cannop Chemical works is mentioned in the 1870 Kelly's Directory of West Dean, within the Lane End section
"Forest of Dean Chemical Co. naphtha manufacturers (W. H. Jackson, manager), Cannop works."

Hi D I elsmore,
You are correct because we are related to the Baxters, I had a lovely uncle Arthur and Auntie Gladys who lived in Auckland Greenlane, when I was a child we used to visit them. My mother was Rita Alice Jones and her father was George Edward Jones and mother Harriett Louisa, they both came from the Forrest of dean area. They imigrated to New Zealand where my mother was born, but I have as yet to find when they came out or any shipping references. I have only just started my research and really appreciate any thing that you are able to tell me.

Bride is a widow - using Advanced Search to find a Marriage of "groom Perkins" to "bride Mary" suggests this maybe her first marriage, a few to consider but the date and locaity fits well, plus the Nelmes name is a probable link (could Sophia & John be her parents or siblings ?):

Thanks for your help, I had not come across the census that places them still in Lydbrook in 1911, is that what that was (census). I am yet to discover when they came to New Zealand, most of the shipping records i have looked at have drawn a blank.
