Does anyone know where Jessamine cottage, Bream is / was?

I have found a reference to it connected to a Jenkins family.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll explore it.

I have googled Jessamine and Jasmine cottage in the past - and just got adverts for places to buy in UK and holiday lets!

Hi Alison

the postcode and road you gave seems to be in the triangle between the Prim Methodists, Bible Christian and Wesleyan chapels in Breams Eaves on an 1880 map - just a short walk NE of St James church.

It's a very likely location for Shadrach Jenkins and family!

Is jessamine an old term for jasmine? Like may blossom, or the may, refers to hawthorn blossom?

The area you have pinpointed is correct for Jasmine Cottage, also we have to remember that most people were not as well educated then as they are now and the way they spelt words can vary quite a lot.

Hi
Out of curiosity, I searched online for Jessamine cottage in the Gloucester Archives and there were a few references to one, including a map of where it is.

If I ever het to read the journal of Shadrach that refers to this cottage, I'll follow this up. It would all be extra info for this site's archive.

There also a reference to a place called The Hoggins in the journal and I've found references to this in the Gloucestershire archives too.

Archive digging this deep is for a future date I think.

Having read some old memories of the forest of dean circa 1850, jessamine seems to be the local name for jasmine or a similar climbing plant often grown against the wall of a house.

So it could well be that a cottage once named Jessamine cottage became known as Jasmine cottage as the old names for plants died out and were replaced by more common names.

Sorry - no info at all - just a quote from a lady who claims to have Shadrach Jenkins personal journal.

"Shadrach & Sarah lived at Jessamine Cottage Bream with their children. Shadrach kept a journal recording the main events of his life, which is now a much treasured family heirloom."

I'm finding it very hard to pin down the person who says they have this diary - I would love to transcribe it for anyone who shares Shadrach and Sarah as ancestors.

Another snippet from Shadrach's diary suggests

"He started work when he was 9 years of age, minding doors at Brunswick Coal Pit, Mosley Green, 3 miles away from home for 6 old pence a day."

It is possible this is a genuine journal I suppose.

The Shadrach Jenkins referred to is son of Thomas Jenkins x Maria Priest, born 1831, brother to Samuel Jenkins mine owner, and married to Sarah Davis in 1856 at Lydbrook. There are plenty of posts in the archives about this family.

I am not a native of the area, so am trying to learn the historical geography as well as the social and family history!

Many thanks in advance for any hints or tips anyone can give.

Hi

Yes please! A Sarah is mentioned in connection with both places - not sure if it's the same Sarah or 2 different one - so will investigate my "Sarahs". There is a Sarah Jenkins as a witness to John Jenkins marriage to Elizabeth Simms.

15 Jul 1837

Elizabeth SIMS

Witness_2: Sarah Jenkins

I don't know if they are related to my line or how (yet) but if there is also a connection to The Hoggins then maybe they are.

Many thanks

Ooo - do tell

How long ago was it renamed?

I wonder if Jessamine cottage and Jasmine cottage were both with those names at the same time.

I wonder if the cottage names are given on the appropriate census forms - I'll see if I can find out.

I have now found out that a William Davies, wife Mary and children Hannah, Sarah and William lived in a cottage with garden in Bream. He owned the cottage and leaves it to his wife in his will in 1858. This Sarah Davies is the one who marries into the Jenkins family and is my gg-grandmother.

Many thanks

Janet
