Longdon, as referred to in the FOD Parish Registers (General)

by Rossgee, New Zealand, Tuesday, February 02, 2021, 04:07 (1424 days ago)

Hello friends. My family history continues to centre on the primary name GURNEY. And brick walls continue to block my way. The first Gurneys recorded in the FOD Family History Trust parish registers appear in the early 1500's with Thomas and Alice having 5 children baptised in LONGDON. The Parish map on the site, locates Longdon to the North East possibly in Worcestershire. But there is a Longdon in Herefordshire which may be the more likely origin of the Gurneys. Can anyone please shed some light on which Longdon may be the one named in the Parish registers or give me a hint on how to get an answer? Much appreciated. I am constantly impressed by this Family History website. A big THANK YOU to all who have built it.

Looking at the list of transcribed Parish Records (under the Resources, Transcribed Parish Records, Progress Overview links) and searching for Longdon gives the parish as Longdon, Worcs.

Hi

This may just be a "red herring", but looking at the Parish records on this site, on 1st May 1602 a John Gurney married Francis Price in Longdon. They were recorded as being "servants of Thos Parker".
If this John Gurney is one of your Gurneys, then "British History on Line" under "Longdon Parish" has references to the Parker Family in the "Manors" sub heading.

This may provide further leads to locate your Gurney's in Longdon.

Good luck

Looking under the Marriage Licences and Marriage Bonds of this site.... all but one state, the people were from LONGDON (also spelt LONGDEN in the County of Worcester/Longden, Worcestershire/Longdon in the Diocese of Worcester.

There is a William GURNEY - in 1812 - from the Parish of LONGDEN in the County of Worcester. He was a Widower aged 50.

Googling: Gurney Longdon Worcestershire

Under the Heading

LONGDON CHURCH, WORCESTERSHIRE. - Bushley Parish

(under the search for GURNEY....

1788, Mar 23. William GURNEY was killed by a kick of a mare - her name was Maggit - at Bushley Park.
