SMITH/GOODE family of Lydney (General)
by vicmillard, Friday, March 26, 2021, 22:53 (1371 days ago)
Hello All :)
I am hoping for help on finding the ancestors of George Henry Smith (b Lydney 1873). Census indicates he lived in Highfield area of Lydney in the early 1900s with his wife and children. Later in Queen Street, where his daughter (my nan) was born.
His father is John SMITH (I know, sorry!), b. abt. 1838, possibly in Berkeley.. Mother was Sarah Grey GOODE (formerly DAVIES b. 1839).
They lived at Lydney Harbour in 1875.
Can anyone shed any light on his parents? (I need fresh eyes!)
Secondly, there is another family on Highfield in the late 1900s, (Highfield Villa?)a Thomas SMITH, a Railway Accountant. His son also worked for the railway and emigrated to Cuba and Argentina in the 1920s. Are these 2 families related, or is it coincidence that they lived kind of next door to each other?
Any info on the Smiths, Goode’s and/or on railways at this time would be much appreciated!
I think I can’t see the word for the trees!
Thanks in advance. :)

Wow! Thanks MPG. What a huge amount of work you have done on my behalf. I am very grateful to you. I will put this together on my tree, and see how it all fits together.
Am I allowed supplementary questions after that? :)
Thanks again. Xx

Good morning MPG, and Happy Easter.
I have updated my tree with your new information.
All roads lead to Awre and Berkeley now, it seems - so there’s an excuse for a summer day out :)
I am still curious as to whether John Smith (b 1814) is related to the Thomas Smith family who lived on Highfield in the 19th Century.
Their father is I think, a Thomas Smith born abt 1810 in Frampton, married Georgianna Gwynn, and his parents were Thomas Smith and Hester (she was from Wick/Absom?)
Your critical eye would be much appreciated!
Warm regards
X
