Baptism at Monmouth (General)

by Simone @, Thursday, September 08, 2022, 12:47 (839 days ago)

Hi all

I have baptism at Monmouth 1887 for a child John son of Eliza Ward, born Monmouth Union. The image shows L H R next to it in the margin... what does that mean please.
There is another Monmouth Union birth below it with the same note.

Thanks :)
Simone

Assuming Monmouth Union was the workhouse, could the note be something to do with money ? Always an issue in those times.

The transcript on the Forest of Dean records for John Ward, mother Elizabeth, states this was her 2nd illegitimate child.

There is a baptism at East Dean Methodist two years earlier
31 May 1885

Alfred John Albert WARD, mother Eliza

Residence : Hansley

Does the H in the second baptism stand for Hansley?

On Gloucestershire Records Office, 1885 baptism, the residence is transcribed as Hausley and Eliza is non-comformist.

These letters appear occasionally against other entries in the Register in the years around 1887. In at least one case they are entered as L.H. Rees. Usually, they are associated with a correction or addition to the entry. In the two cases in question, it might be the addition of “West Dean” to the original entries. There are newspaper references to L.H. Rees which indicate he was a senior curate at St Mary’s during the relevant time. His name appears as the officiating minister at many baptisms. He later became Vicar at Kirkdale, Yorkshire.

Thanks very much everyone for your help.
Thanks Mike that seems to clear it up :)

I was hoping these two children were my missing children.
I have managed to get digital images of the birth certificates this afternoon.
John is still a possibility, mother Eliza a domestic servant West Dean.
Alfred was actually born in 1883, mother Eliza a domestic servant, East Dean. Leah Ward present at the birth registered it.
Thing is Eliza was born 1872 so that would make her only 11. Not impossible of course and maybe that's why Leah has stepped up and registered the birth. However I don't have Leah anywhere in my tree so looks like I will have to research her for bit to see if anything ties up.

Thanks again

On the Forest of Dean records

Marriage at Drybrook 16 June 1861

William Ward aged 44 Widower, Collier at Horsely

Married

Leah Patsons (should be Parsons - aged 24) surname incorrect in records

Etc etc.

On the GRO Index the children baptised at East Dean

Rhoda Ward 1874
John 1877
Florence Mary 1879

The mother’s maiden name was PARSONS

This info re mother’s maiden name is also available on GloucestershireBDM.

….

William Ward would have, I assume, children with his first Wife.

I can see the family on the census returns but nothing standing out to tie them to my family.
I'll research them a bit more.
