Worgan's Wood (General)

by Tory Worgan @, Friday, June 24, 2005, 18:49 (7126 days ago)

I am searching for information about Worgan's Wood in the Forest of Dean. I believe our family lived in the Forest of Dean area. Not sure if family actually lived in Worgan's Wood, however I would just like to know a little more about the origins of the Wood, and any info that might be available about it.

My direct decendants departed from Cardiff between 1881 and 1884 - can't find the ship they sailed on, let alone entry records into Australia, however we do know they took up land in Australia in October 1884. Perhaps they jumped ship in Australia?

Thomas Worgan b 17-6-1851, d 21-10-1910
William Henry Worgan b 1842 d 15-10-1911
Emma Worgan (nee Prince) b 1837 d 1888
Elizabeth H Worgan b 1878 d 1888

Thank you,

There is an entry In the UK National Archives :-

Covering dates 1781 Oct. 19
Scope and content Indenture of Lease by William Worgan to Thomas James of certain land in the Parish of Huelsfield [Hewelsfield], Co. Gloucester.
Access conditions Normal Closure before FOI Act: 30 years
Closure status Open Document, Open Description
Held by The National Archives, Kew

might be worth chasing this up in realtion to the "Worgan" roots in St Briavels / Hewlesfield.

http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ co-ords 354400,198760 will centre a view on the old monmument that is roughly to the north of today's Worgans Wood. You can also make out the route of Offas Dyke running through the wood.

The wood is not marked but Black Morgan Wood and James Thorn are !

I have only just come across this entry so this is a bit late perhaps - I have a William Henry and Thomas Worgan in my past family. Brothers of Ellen Maria. I have a book that belonged to Ellen Maria and she wrote the birth dates of all her immediate family members in it. According to her William Hemry was born 12th December 1841 ; Thomas 19th June 1852. And there was another Henry born 21st July 1860; and there is a Henry John aged 20 on the 1881 census

There was also a William Worgan aged 37, born St Briavel and a mariner living in Bristol in 1881, Married to an Ann

Any help?????
