Hi
I am interested in JAMES from Pillowell and have JOHN & SARAH JAMES in Pillowell on the 1861 census onwards.

I am desperately seeking the marriage of John JAMES to Sarah DAVIS prior to 1857 (first child baptised 1857).

My GGrandmother, Caroline JAMES was bn 1864, Pillowell, parents John JAMES and Sarah DAVIS.
I have plenty of info on this family 1861 and later, but nothing definite pre 1861.

Any connections???

Best wishes

Hello Russell, Saw your message and thought it was worth a chance. I am researching the Watts family who lived in Whitecliff during the 1800s.
My great grandmother, Lucy Watts, born about 1855, to John Watts and Eliza Morgan, married William White who died about 1882, and then married Enoch Drew and they emigrated to Australia in 1884. Lucy's father was John Watts and his father was also John Watts. They were both potters and operated the Pottery at Whitecliff from the early 1800s up to about 1890. Lucy was the 8th child in a family of 9. The Pottery stood quite close to the Nags Head Inn. I have found a William Watts in the 1851 Census, 38, Newland, wife Sarah 35, Daughters Anna 4 and Sarah 2. I think he may be a brother to John Watts junior (above) but I haven't as yet been able to confirm that.
I'm hoping we might be looking for the same Watts.
Regards Carmel.

by Russell Thorne @, Tuesday, June 21, 2005, 05:38 (7127 days ago) @ Carmel Boyle

Hi Carmel,
My interest relates to Eliza Caroline Watts (1843-1915) whose birthplace in NZ is listed as "Chapmans" ,
Wiltshire. This has posed some difficulty for me as my William Watts family was more closely connected to Newnham, Glos where her father William and mother Charlotte were living. The 1851 census mentions an Eliza born Bromsgrove, Worcestershire in 1843 as a niece. There is an Eliza B Newnham 1844 in the 1861 census, which is more likely for me however Eliza emigrated to New Zealand in 1863 and married shortly after to a Frederick Thorne from Newnham.
I have no knowledge of siblings either in UK or NZ. I have tended to work on the Newnham area particularily as that is where my Thorne connections lie.
Hope this contributes to the search,
Russell Thorne

The 1851 census mentions an
» Eliza born Bromsgrove, Worcestershire in 1843 as a niece. There is an
» Eliza B Newnham 1844 in the 1861 census, which is more likely for me

This looks like Eliza later in 1861 and 71` so can probably rule her out of the search
