Frank Delicate [1912-1968] - Upleadon, Marriage Banns 1937 (Parish Records)
I've recently come across an article in the Gloucestershire Echo [Tuesday, 18 May 1937], which suggests that my Great Uncle, Frank DELICATE, jilted his bride to be [unnamed] two hours before their wedding was scheduled to take place at Upleadon Church on 17 May 1937. I'm trying to locate the Banns for this event in an attempt to discover the name of the jilted bride. Any help will be gratefully received!

Frank DELICATE 1912-1967
You're right, it's not a Gloucestershire name. My grandfather's family were all born and bred in Derby and this particular branch of Delicates hailed from Gilling, North Yorkshire. From what I can gather, Frank was an itinerant and had met the lady in question some two years previously when he was living at the Wayfarers' Home at Pauntley. They kept in contact after he left Pauntley, but I've no idea who the jilted bride was - hence I'm hoping to track down the Banns [or, I guess, a Marriage Licence]. He was born 22 March 1912 and died 1 February 1967, marrying twice [1938 and 1942].
Frank Delicate [1912-1968] - Upleadon, Marriage Banns 1937
Reading the article there are some clues that may help in identifying the jilted bride.
" his bride to be, a Newent woman"
" the couple met at a whist drive about 2 years ago"
"The woman was in service at the Vicarage, Upleadon"
" The bride and bridesmaids were dressed and waiting at the bride's sisters house a mile or so away from the church"
" she is on the verge of a nervous breakdown, the bride's mother told an Echo reporter"
I wonder if the marriage register was already "written up" and had to be crossed out, it may be worth a look
The 2 marriages for Upleadon in 1937 have entry numbers 111 ( for April) and 113 ( for November) so my guess is that entry 112 is for Frank Delicate and unknown in May ( date of newspaper article) of that year.

Many thanks! That possibility hadn't occurred to me, but given the timing of the other two marriages at Upleadon in 1937, it does seem quite likely that the marriage was written up and then crossed out. I'll follow that up. Thanks again!

David is right the register was completed beforehand and the crossed out, unfortunately the crossing out was so good that it was completely unreadable, but I think the marriage was by Banns.

Thanks Graham, that's helpful - disappointing as it is - I'll keep looking for the Banns.

Violet Adelina ENGLAND, the jilted woman 1905 - 2000
Hi Mike,
Many thanks for taking the trouble to provide the additional information - much appreciated! No doubt the poor woman was scarred for life by her traumatic experience at the hands of Great Uncle Frank! Interestingly, Frank subsequently made it to the altar with someone else in 1938 and then married bigamously in 1942 [but doesn't appear to have remained long in either relationship], so appears to have been quite a character!
Regards,
Sue
