One possible reason is that one child would die in infancy, and then the name would be used again for the next child.

In some cases, however, the head of the house would list all the children, living or dead, and when they were born. I have seen it happen before, where children have died in infancy, but still been recorded a few years later on the census...

In your case, the enumerator may not have paid any heed to it, or may even have worded his questions such that the head of the house put all the children on.

I hope this provides a possible explination
