I am living in Cheltenham,to where my ancestors moved in 1862. A George Sindrey came via Gloucester to Cheltenham from the Forest of Dean. In Cheltenham he had a four acre market garden. His three sons all had market gardens. As yet, I have found only one reference to George's father, named William, who may have been a blacksmith. I can find no reference to where he lived. I would appreciate it if someone out there could give me some info'.

SINDREY (or however they spell it)
I have loads of records of Sindreys mostly in the HEF area of the FOD.Is there anyone out there also researching them? My g.g.grandfather William Sindry b.1811,is well documented in Censuses, but I have the names of others whom I cannot fit into the jigsaw, although none strayed too far. At present I am puzzling over William Sindry b.1818 and Mary Sindry b.1822 in HEF.
Can the William Sindry(sometimes spelt Sendry)b.1809 of Olveston be connected. He was a blacksmith like William b.1811.

The spelling is down to the Enumerator and transcriber , in this pastime it often pays to think phonetically ( ugh ? ) ...

Its not far across the Severn from Olvaston / Alvaston / Thornbury etc to Lydney/ Newnham and on it the heart of the Forest. I have seen a fair number of "outsiders" coming into the Forest- I have a Somerset Blacksmith who "turns" up in the Forest in my tree..

as I often write - keep an open mind !

Thanks for this info'
I have all the other census docs. for this family, usually using the "C" initial letter.(The capital "C" does not seem to occur in my name before the 1800s.)

I have definitely located my family line back to William Sindry,1768-1852 married 1802 to Mary Morgan,1771-1847 at Weston under Penyard. George 1812 was not their son and I have not found any others born around that time in Harry Hill(perhaps he only had sisters). Each census lists him as born in East Dean.

I have tracked Syndry back to late 1500s and have a possible family line upto William 1768. I have a will(quite ledgible)dated 6th June,1731,for a William, also his wife Margaret's July 1731(in Latin, not translated yet)who lived in Lea.I've found names of eight childreen in William's will. The name R. Binstead appears on the second will, but I can't find that name locally.

I lack geographical knowledge of the F.o.D, so I think I must miss logical connections between family groups.

Info'about Syndrys before the 1800's would be appreciated. They seemed to be farmers, sawyers and blacksmiths.

Hi,

I just been checking some Dymock transcripts before putting the on the website and found the following:

Guy Syndery baptised 25 April 1630 son of William

William Sindery buried 30 November 1667.

Just thought this might be of interest.

My great grandmother, Beatrice Cyndrey (cindrey) married Percy/Percival Mears.
My grandfather and one of his siblings daughters said my grandfather lived around Forest of Dean and that Beatrice Cyndrey was from Cinderford.
Percival and Beatrice had the following children.
Reginald "Reg" Mears
Cecil born Aug 4, 1910 came to USA around 1909
Dorothy Mears (married Gus DeBaker) born 1912
Leslie Mears born 1915 in Canada
Clifford Mears born 1918 in Illinois USA
I have no info on either of their parents Percival and Beatrice except that Percivals family was well to do, and he worked as a porter on a train where he found his wife Beatrice, who was a maid on the train, and that his family did not approve.

I was pleased to see your info' as I had found your Beatrice but been unable to get further back than 1901. She was a servant for the Treeby family in Cheltenham which is where I live.
My family name,Sindrey has been spelt like this since 1871 when my great grandfather came to Cheltenham via Gloucester, from the Forest of Dean where he had been a blacksmith. He married Mary Ann Smith in 1862 and moved next to her parents in Cheltenham where they had four acres of orchard and a large house. Since this time most of the Sindreys have been in the horticultural industry, but my brother is the last one and he has no children.
I have researched the Syndrys back to about 1600(that was the earliest version) and found at least 15 different ways to spell it. "English as she is spoke" is what they say. I am certain that we are related way back.
I have now checked all the Census documents for Beatrice's family and found that the people transposing these docs. are at fault.
1891 Census listed as Condrey but definitely says Cindrey on the Doc.and Beatrice 1887 is there.
1881 Census listed as Cindery and her father Tom 1859 is listed.(They got it correct that time).
1871 Census says Cowdrey but definitely Cindery on the doc.
1861 Census listed as Scudery, but on the doc,I spy an "i" in the first
syllable and I wouldn't translate it as Scudery.
I found the birth of Beatrice in the England and Wales Civil Registration Index 1837-1983. She is BEATRICE REBECCA CINDERY b.1886 - district East Dean, Westbury on Severn,Gloucestershire. Quite a distinctive name. I searched and found Beatrice Rebecka Cindrey in marriages -June 1908 in Alresford, Hampshire, but no husband's name, her name is printed twice - another error.I found the birth of a baby girl,Ivy Mears born in Alresford Hampshire in Dec. 1908 - shotgun wedding?
I searched through out the Forest of Dean and surrounding areas and could find no Percy Mears there, but located the one in Mitcham Surrey. It was interesting to see that in 1901 he is listed as born 1882 and also his twin brother Douglas. Percy is a railway porter, Douglas is an engine cleaner and older brother Herman 1880 is also a railway porter. Father Maurice 1853 is a decorator and mother is Rachel 1852.
The Forest of Dean is a beautiful tourist area nowadays, but in the old days it was an industrial area, most of the Cinderys seem to have been coal miners. many of the girls went off to be servants, just like Beatrice.

I thought i'd replied to the previous replies already, but apparently I haven't. I really appreciate everybody's info, and the last post really tied it all together for me, because I was kinda lost with the two before that. If anyone would like to talk further about the family, I'd love to! Please get ahold of me and we can share stories and info. thanks:)

Sorry you were lost with the Census info - its often the best we can do without some family documents/ knowledge to validate the findings.

The transcription errors are carried forward so that you can track these down at a later date more easily.
