There are many YEMM family units from around the Lydbrook/ Ruardean/ Reddings area of the Forest.
If the one you are looking for is shown as a Coal miner from Lydbrook in Featherstone Yorks in 1881 census, with wife Ellen, then I suspect this is them with young family before they moved north.
In 1851 West Dean
YEM George 33 Collier West Dean
Ellen 33 Lydney
George 11 Tredgar Wales
Paulina 6 East Dean
Benjamin 4 East Dean
David 1 West Dean
In 1871
David is a Miner in Worksop Nottinghamshire

Many thanks for your note. I think these might be different Yemms - I have found Thomas and Elizabeth who had William (great, great, grandfather), Mary Ann and James. They are shown on the 1871 census and Thomas was 41 and the head of the house, I now want to go a bit further back and find Thomas's relations.
Would you happen to know if there is an old map of Lydbrook I could get hold of to give me some idea of the layout of the area. Also would there be many churches there with cemeteries?
If not thanx for your help anyway.

The IGI suggests that Thomas William Yemm was born 1830 at Coppice nr Lydbrook
marrying Elizabeth Beale ( dau of Thomas Beale) at the Forest Chuch on 21 Feb 1853
Thomas son of Richard Yemm ( 1790 )
The "obvious" entry in 1851 can probably be discounted :-
There is another entry for Ann Yemm bap 1809 Ruardean, dau of Thomas Yemm / Mary Bradley
who marries a Jones in 1838.
possible 1851 East Dean entry

My great grandmother was. Mary Ann Yemm .
She, and other family members moved from the forest of dean , north to Leigh in Lancashire where she married a Brown / Blears. (found out Blears name was changed to Brown by Thomas Blears who was in trouble for stealing sheep, etc..!).
Doris Brown, daughter of Mary Ann Blears was my Grandmother, and Barbra Brown (Eaton) was my mother. Doris Brown (Blears) and family were very much connected to the Salvation Army in Leigh, and whenn she died having my mum, the whole town came to a standstill.
Unfortunatly, Doris passed away after having my mum, but I still have photographs of Mary Yemm. and Doris.
