Phelps, George b1819 FoD d3 March 1864 at Carwell, NSW Aust. (General)

by davidphelps, Sunday, May 18, 2008, 13:12 (6117 days ago)

Hi,

I am searching for information on George Phelps, and his parents William and Anna (Bullock).

(please note, that this posting relates to Jean Herbert's 'convict records' posting. I have already collected the information from there - thanks to Jean and all the respondents).

I have George's death certificate, and the birth certificate of his son James Nevell.

From these certificates we know that George was:
b. 1819 (possibly 16 May) at Forest of Dean (no more detail - and I am learning just how big the FoD is!!)
m. 26 Sept. 1853 at Sofala, NSW, Australia (near Bathurst) to Mary Hawker (nee Vincent Nevell)
d. 3 March 1864 at Carwell, NSW, Australia (also near Bathurst)

we also know that his father was William Phelps (occupation farmer) and mother was Anna (nee Bullock).

It is possible that George was a convict, and that he arrived with a brother.

I have found the records for one George Phelps who was tried at the Gloucester Duaster (?) Sessions on June 27 1843 and sentenced to 10 years. He was transported to Tasmania (Van Diemens Land) on the Lord Auckland.

He was granted a conditional pardon between 1834 and 1859 (presumably July 1849) after spending 6 years 1 month in the colony. He was still in Tasmania in 1849 (based on the Ledger records).

I have ordered all the convict records that one can obtain from the Tasmanian Archives. There is a 6 week waiting list, so it will be a while before I know the crime this George committed, and what he looked like.

There was a George Phelps in Glos. in the 1841 census:

Surname First Name Age Place Box Piece Folio
PHELPS George 20 RUSPIDGE 3 364/9 36

This is prior to the convict George being tried, so I believe it could be the same one. (There were many other George Phelps' in the census, but none the right age).

I have not been able to find George in the BMD yet, but I do not know the geography of the FoD so I may be looking in the wrong parish/hundred.

We also do not have any BMD information for William and Anna. I have found a few marriages between William Phelps and Anna/Hanna, but not Bullock. Is it possible that Anna was on her second marriage, and not recorded as Bullock? Are there many variations on the name of Bullock?

My family and I are travelling to the FoD in August to try and trace George, William and Anna - and hopefully go back a bit further. I was hoping to find as much information as possible before we arrive, so that we can look in the right areas. We could spend a long time visiting every parish church cemetery, otherwise!

Thanks in advance for any information that can be provided.

In particular, I wish to extend many thanks to Jean Herbert for getting me started in these postings.

Additional information:
I have found some William and Anna Phelps' in the 1841 census (I would think that the only possibilities are the 40-60 age bracket):

Phelps, George b1819 FoD d3 March 1864 at Carwell, NSW Aust.

by davidphelps, Monday, May 19, 2008, 00:24 (6116 days ago) @ ChrisW

Hi,

the only document that I currently have that gives Anna Phelps' maiden name is her son's (George) Death Certificate. This was issued in Australia, and I guess we not know if George's wife (Mary Hawker, nee Vincent Nevell) had the correct information at hand or not. I guess that Anna could be one of many variations on first names, as well.

thanks for all of the searching so far - very helpful.

is there a record of the Glos. Quarter Sessions from around 1843?

cheers

George PHELPS Cinderford Gaol Record 1843

by davidphelps, Wednesday, May 28, 2008, 00:22 (6107 days ago) @ dink999

Thank you dink999, that matches all of my records for the George Phelps transported to Van Diemens Land on the Lord Aukland in 1844.

This is the best lead that I have for my ancestor!

Best of all, the description bears a resemblance to the only photograph we have of George.

was there any mention of any other Phelps' boys involved? Or maybe of any Hawker boys? It is thought that George came to Australia with a brother, but we have no evidence for this.

David

The only clue in the Gaol Records was the next entry in the ledger that appears to show George had at least one accomplice, namely James WIILIAMS aged 19. But his sentence of only 18 months seems to make George PHELPS the "main man" in this crime!

Hi,

I have been searching for the Parents of Henry PHELPS b. Little Gorsley, Aston Ingham m. Maria SPARKES 11 oct 1857 in Ruardean.

The only one I could find is Joseph Phelps and Elizabeth?? by the census of 1851 (the only Census I can find joseph on!!) he was born in 1795, but he does not know where(could he be the joseph from Kempley?)There is a marriage in Walford to Elizabeth DEW in 1811 but again going by the 1851 census she would only be about 10?

Perhaps Joseph was married previously? hence the big age gap.

Maria SPARKES parents are the same, William SPARKES and Maria?? apear from nowhere......Ag Labs!!

If anyone has any Ideas where I could look next it would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Finbar.
