by dink999, Saturday, July 12, 2008, 02:54 (6061 days ago)

From the next batch of inquests soon to be online the following looks interesting -does anyone know more details?

An inquisition taken this 19th day of June 1872 at the Police Station Mitcheldean on view of the body of John Griffiths aged 49 years a Quarryman, also

Thomas Goode aged 46 years a Collier
Hiram Bayliss aged 31 years a Quarryman
William Tomlins aged 59 years a Quarryman

In all 4 cases the verdict of the jury was given as

Asphyxia from gas resulting from an explosion of gunpowder used in blasting a rock when endeavouring to save the lives of other men

The Hastings Plump Hill

Hiram Bayliss is buried at Holy Trinity Churchyard (Forest Church), Drybrook. I found his grave some years ago on the right hand side of the burial ground (nearest the Plump Hill) but stupidly never took a photo or marked where it was, as it was not part of my research at the time. I hope to go back and find his grave soon

I have tried several times to find Hiram Baylis's grave stone abd failed but think it must have been removed in a general tidy-up a few years ago - shame

Goode Thomas
17/06/1872
46
Collier
Point Limestone Quarry, Plump Hill
Died from asphyxia from gas resulting from an explosion of gunpowder used in blasting a rock which deceased incautiously approached

Point Limestone Quarry
No deaths were recorded officially at this quarry, but four deaths did occur following a spectacular explosion in 1872. Several men rushed into the quarry after the firing and were overcome by fumes. Four men died, they were: Thomas Goode of Mitcheldean, Hiram Baylis and John Griffiths, both of the Plump, and William Tomlin of Cinderford.
