WEAVER Frederick H (General)

by Don Cameron @, Friday, November 28, 2008, 02:59 (5931 days ago)

From the Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser, Thursday 16 January 1883: Family Notices - Frederick H. WEAVER drowned in the Hunter River at West Maitland (New South Wales) on Sunday 14th January 1883, aged 35 years, native of St Bravels (sic), Gloucestershire, England.

I have edited this newspaper notice slightly. Checking the FOD records, I can't find a Frederick H. WEAVER being baptised at St Briavels, although this of course means nothing, as some people didn't bother to have their children baptised.

The only potential fit might be Frederick H. WEAVER son of Joshua & Alice WEAVER who appears in the 1861 Census at RG 9/ 3979, folio 11, page 15, schedule 93. However, this Frederick H. WEAVER, was, according to the 1861 Census, born in 1859. Of course the newspaper notice might have stated an incorrect age.

Rosanna WEAVER, sister to the above Frederick H. WEAVER, married Colin HULIN. Members of the HULIN family were living in the Maitland, Hunter Valley area at this time - so perhaps there is a connexion here. After 1871 Frederick H. WEAVER and other male members of his family no longer appear in any Census - well none that I can find.

Cheers,

Don Cameron.

Hello Mike,

Thanks for all the additional information.

I had spotted the marriage in Bristol, but I was not sure it was the same couple. There was a Mary THOMAS with the WEAVER family in the 1861 Census, but she was listed as a servant and from Gloucester - so I don't know if she is related. She might be, because by that time Alice WEAVER was deceased, and Joshua was bring up quite a large young family. At that time he had employed a governess, I guess because so many children were under the age of 10.

This morning I checked the NSW BMD Index from 1788 - 1907 and found the death entry of Frederick WEAVER as follows:

9059/1883 WEAVER FREDERICK H AGE 24 YEARS DIED WEST MAITLAND WEST MAITLAND (Registration District).

So it seems that I have the right person, it's just that the newspaper incorrectly reported his age as 35 years old in stead of 24 years old. There is a lesson here!

Cheers,

Don Cameron

HULIN Colin of St Briavels b1842, attacked in Clearwell 1877

by Jefff @, West London, Middlesex, Friday, November 15, 2013, 01:18 (4118 days ago) @ Don Cameron

While searching the Welsh Newspapers website for Benjamin Hulin b1881 of Clearwell, instead I found this entry regarding Colin Hulin (an uncle perhaps?) in the same locality a few years earlier. It seems the Hulins were an unlucky family !

From the Cardiff Times of 17th February 1877

"FOREST OF DEAN.
...Sessions....at Coleford on Tuesday—before Sir James Campbell, Bart..., and Isiah Trotter — two young men of Clearwell, named Williams and Yarworth, were brought up on remand, charged with assaulting Colin Hulin, of St Briavels on the 7th instant. Mr Evans, of Chepstow, appeared to prosecute, and Mr Jackson for the defendants. It appeared from the evidence of complainant, that on the day named he was at the Wyndham Arms, Clearwell, when he saw the two prisoners and others. A conversation took place on coursing, when Williams challenged to fight him. On leaving the house, and on getting to his trap for the purpose of proceeding home, Williams gave him a seyere blow in the eye, which knocked him down in the road. Williams knocked him down four times in all, and Yarworth kicked him. His shoulder was putout, and he was otherwise injured about his body. In cross-examination complainant admitted offering to fight Williams for 10s on Bearse Common, but not till he was very much provoked. Several witnesses were called. The bench discharged Yarworth, but fined Williams in the penalty of £5 and costs."

HULIN Colin of St Briavels b1842, attacked in Clearwell 1877

by HilaryJenkins @, Baltimore, USA, Friday, November 15, 2013, 18:01 (4118 days ago) @ Jefff

@Jeff,
Interesting! My grandmother said she would watch fights from her bedroom window on Saturday nights -I think it overlooked the Butcher's Arms or the Wyndham Arms. It seemed Saturday night fights were part of the entertainment......the men would get drunk and fight! I know very little about the Hulins other than one of them may be my grandmothers father.
Thanks for the posting!

Hi Don - thanks, that's very kin of you.....My ggrandmother Amy Dew Nash was born in 1884 and lived in Clearwell. As it seems unlikely that Benjamin, Sidney or Earnest were likely candidates, Edwin (son of Ethel Ann and James) may be a possibility or the Hulins in St Brievels - who was Harold Hulin? Are there any family tales to tell?
Thanks,
Hilary

Hilary, here are my JENKINS / HULIN connexions : -

Elizabeth HULIN born St Briavels, 1809 daughter of James HULIN and Ann HOWELL, married (1) St Briavels, 7 Aug 1837; Benjamin HULIN born St Briavels, 1788, son of John HULIN and Hannah YOUNG.

(2) at Christchurch, 27 Feb 1854; John JENKINS (place and date of birth unknown) son of James JENKINS and unknown mother.

I have other JENKINS / HULIN marriages but these would be outside the time frame.

As to Harold HULIN I have quite a few, one born here in Australia. What might be of interest to you are ;

Harold Edwin (Jerrold) HULIN son of Henry Phelps HULIN and Maria KEAR born St Briavels 3 Jan 1875 = married Mary Maud COLES in Banbury, Oxfordshire in 1896

Harold HULIN son of William Isaac HULIN and Mary Ann, born St Briavels, 6 Sep 1893 = Violet Rose Muriel NICHOLLSON in Islington, London in 1925

Harold Archibald HEWITT - HULIN son of John Augustus HULIN and Mary Ann, born Hammersmith, London in 1891 = Married Mabel Edith Mary CASSIDY in London - date unknown

There are a few more;

Harold HULIN son of Peter HULIN and Mary Elizabeth LAMBERT born Bristol - not sure about the dates etc - even though he is a very close relation to me - work to be done here!

Harold HULIN son of William HULIN and Mary Ann, born Dukinfield, Greater Manchester in 1910 but he died as a child.

I'll do some research on the HULIN and JENKINS and see if I can come up with something more substantial.

@ Don, thanks for posting information on the Hulins. It may well be a wild goose chase trying to pin the paternity of my grandmother on a Hulin from over a hundred years ago......The Hulins of Clearwell lived very close and in a time where people weren't very mobile it seems they would have had to live in fairly close proximity .....There are Hulins in St Brievels, I guess any males born after 1874 and before 1884 in the FoD area are possible candidates. I appreciate your help.
Hilary
