Two old records for the Forest of Dean Family History. My wife had thrown them away but I rescued them since I believe that even such small remnants of the past as these, all help to provide useful information about how things really were. I expect, as in our area in south east London pre-war, ordinary people would have contributed a penny a week to ensure the services of the District Nurse.
The reports were in a house we have been clearing of an old friend whose father Frank Idiens lived at Littledean pre-1939 and was a road surveyor to the County Council. I am the son-in-law of Dr Rouse (died Cinderford 1942) - I never knew him.

I'll second that; a small but interesting glimpse of social history pre NHS. Thanks.

Nursing in the FOD
On the Ruardean Section2 (photographs) there are two photographs of my x Great Aunt Fanny Eveline WICKENDEN in her Nursing Uniform c1909. Fanny nursed at the Southmead Hospital Bristol.
She is mentioned in Google Books - Nursing History Review Vol 15 by Patricia D'Antonio.
Under the Heading, Applicants Accepted for Training as VNMs in Gloucestershire (only a handful)
'Fanny Wickenden was sent for training in August 1909 - but she did not appear to the demands made on her during the training and was recalled in December'
Sadly, Fanny went to Swindon, Wiltshire to her brother's in 1900 and gave birth to a Son who was adopted - she never married.
It also talks about a Nurse Thompson working in St Briavels, who was not very satisfactory!
