Kelly's Directory 1879 of the Forest of Dean & Surrounding Areas
These directories give a full description and contain a wealth of information about a village, all the farmers, the tradesmen, important persons such as the Lord of the Manor, vicars, school teachers, post office staff, pub landlord and more.
Many thanks to May Brace who has kindly transcribed these directories and made them available.

This devoted work produces the first time I've seen what must surely be Fetter Hill spelt phonetically as indeed it is sometimes still pronounced - "Futterill". Anyone know if the spelling "Futterill" was ever legitimate? Or has the compiler of Kelly's simply been taken in by local pronunciation or even a bit of kidology? We have seen threads on here demonstrating that variation in the spelling of a surname was common, but I imagine variations in the spelling of a place name, except over a long period of time like "Rewardine" for "Ruardean", are much rarer.
