Deakins - Parkend (General)

In 1877 (?) Thomas Deakin arrived in to live at Parkend House on his appointment as colliery manager of the Parkend Mines. Deakin was born in Pontypool in 1850 and had worked in mining since he was thirteen. In 1885 The Parkend & New Fancy Collieries Co.Ltd purchased the mines. The company was part owned by Deakin who was chairman and managing director. There followed a period of prosperity and Deakin was appointed a JP and became the unofficial squire in the village People were expected to doff there caps or curtsey when they pass in the village. He died in 1935 and is buried in Parkend churchyard
