Baptism..workhouse (Parish Records)

by sandiep @, Saturday, June 16, 2012, 20:54 (4577 days ago)

Hi

my gggrandmother & ggrandmother spent quite a bit of time in the workhouse Westbury upon Severn........there was also a brother
names are Mary Elizabeth Lewis b 1835/36 Gloucester and Mary Elizabeth Lewis b 1870 Eastdean and William Thomas Lewis b c 1872 Eastdean
all are in 1881 census in workhouse.
Looking at Parish records they appear to have been baptised in 1877 but William was baptised in January and Mary in October it says Littledean workhouse was this the same as Westbury upon Severn? and would it be usual to baptise girls and boys separatly?

Would workhouse records have information on father? I am fairly sure who the father was as Mary was living with a William Smith in 1871 and Mary Elizabeth b 1870 had a daughter Frances Louisa Lewis my grandmother also baseborn in Gloucester workhouse and in 1901 she was living with her halfsister Emma Williams nee Smith. It has taken about 6 years to get this far but it still leaves a few unanswered questions, which I wish I had asked my Gran when she was alive!!

On the 1871 census Mary & daughter are only listed as Visitors at William Smith's house.

In 1822 it opened a workhouse in the former Red Lion inn (fn. 62) and appointed a governor to farm the poor in it for £240, the inmates' earnings, and bastardy payments. From 1823 the workhouse was also used by the parishes of Abenhall and Flaxley, and from 1824 it was run as a pin factory. In 1826 Littledean parish had 13 bedsteads in the workhouse. (fn. 63)

What a fantastic ammount of information........thank you I can now see how poor Mary ended up in the workhouse with her mother dying when she was 10 and her father when she was 12 poor lass.

I guess with younger Mary I had better send for some birth cert to see which one is her.

Frances Louisa LEWIS 1888 -

by sandiep @, Sunday, June 17, 2012, 20:05 (4576 days ago) @ slowhands

again many thanks for this............I guess you think I might be taking a leap of faith in assuming Frances is related to the Smiths & Williams.

My feeling is she is ........Emily Smith who married Henry Williams had a daughter also called Emily who married a Joseph Hart........they had 2 daughters who I did meet when younger they lived in Rustpidge and they refered to my grandmother Frances as their Aunt which if my supposition that her mother was the daughter of William Smith would be correct.

Mary Elizabeth the younger did in 1911 call herself Elizabeth Smith she was living at same address in Alvin Street as in 1901.......I have no ide why she didnt bring up Frances herself, and didnt even realise my Nan was born in the workhouse till after she died.....to late to ask any questions.

can you tell me if the workhouse records would give me anymore information?
I live in Oxfordshire so could visit Archives.
