So James was actually born abt 1854, so he was 21 on his first marriage, perfectly fits the birth of his children, and shows his claimed age in 1911 was a tad optimistic, presumably because of his younger second-wife Alice.

Regarding that 1911 Census for James Hawker at the Railway Inn, Lea, without any disrespect this seems a large family/staff for what was presumably a small and perhaps quiet hotel ?

Sadly that same year the family/staff got smaller, I wonder if Fred had been a sickly lad, which explains him being listed as a scholar at age of 14 when many boys far younger would have been working in the Cinderford mines etc ?

---

On reflection, presumably the Railway Inn c1911 did get some passing trade from commercial salesmen etc ?. Mitcheldean Road Station was the nearest point on the Gloster-Ross-Hereford railway line to the northern Forest, East Dean, Cinderford etc, being about 1.5 miles from Mitcheldean.

Even in it's later days when the surrounding area had become more populated, there are still very few houses and such like near the Railway Inn, see centre-right of this 1948 O.S. map.
