Looking for info for Harry Murphy 1897 or 1898 (General)

by Yeandle-Hignell, Tuesday, May 24, 2022, 15:13 (946 days ago)

Hello

I am trying to find information about Harry Murphy born abt 1898. His father was William Murphy and his Mother wasSarah Jane Murphy (according to the 1901 Census). By the 1911 census he was no longer listed as living with this family. I presume that he died, but I see no death record. All the other children born to this couple were baptized in Woolaston or Tidenham. I can not find a record of Baptism for Harry. Does anyone have any information or suggestions for where I might look to solve this puzzle?

Thank you for your help!

Sylvia

Looking at GloucestershireBMD and GRO Index the children of William and Sarah (whose maiden name is TERRELL)

There is a Bertie Murphy …. Mother’s maiden name Terrell 1899 Forest of Dean Office: Chepstow which seems to tie up with the siblings.

?

There is baptism at Tidenham

17 January 1900

Bertie Murphy

Father: William

mother’s name : not stated.

does the 1911 census state if any children had died?

?

William Murphy married Sarah Terrell 23 Jan 1892 in Woolaston.

? There is a baptism at Woolaston 31 Oct 1897 of an

Edward Harry Murphy

Parents : James and Elizabeth Annie (on Gloucestershire BMD and GRO index, mothers maiden name Boughton)

Think these are two brothers as

James Murphy married Mary Ann Boughton at Woolaston 4 Dec. 1883 and James was a Sailor. The father is John Murphy on both marriages.

Thank you for the response.

Sarah Jane Tyrell and William Murphy had many children.
Elizabeth Edith 1892
Percival William 1896
Harry 1898
Bertram (Bertie) 1899
Florence May 1900
Frances 1903
Frederick Amos 1905
Stanley James 1908
Arthur Harold 1910
Henry James 1912
I didn’t see any mention of a child having died, and it seems strange that there is no baptism or death record. Do you think it is possible that even though he was listed as a son he was just being cared for by Sarah and William?

.? Can you find the other Murphy family 1901 and 1911

There is a Gertrude Alice …. Mother’s maiden name Boughton …. 1900. and a Violet Annie …. and a Thomas James 1907, although the mother calls herself, Mary Anne, Elizabeth Annie, Mary, depending on the baptism record.

I can see the family you are talking about. John Murphy and Mary Ann ( Broughton) Murphy
In 1901 they have a child called Edward born 1898.
Then in 1911 they have a child Edward Harry born 1898.
It does seem like a coincidence. But do you think it would be possible for the same child to be listed as the son of two different sets of parents in the 1901 census?

On the 1911 census, it should say, how many children born and how many have died. What does it say for the family you are researching? I don’t belong to Ancestry any more so can’t check.

How interesting! I had never noticed that section on the census before. It says 8 children born and zero have died…and only lists 7 children. So Harry must be staying somewhere else at the time of the census. Now I just have to figure out where he is. I’m still puzzled that there is no baptism.

You have been so helpful! Thank you!
