Employment Records in the Forest (General)
by Yeandle-Hignell, Sunday, April 02, 2023, 17:34 (633 days ago)
Hello
My grandmother Hilda Yeandle-Hignell lived in Littledean 1930-1933. I think she must have been employed somewhere since she was not married. Does anyone have any suggestions about where I could look to find out where she was employed? Thank you!

Hi
Thank you for your reply! Yes, you have the correct person. I can’t imagine there would have been many employers for women at that time in the Forest of Dean. I’m thinking schools, churches and pubs/hotels? Is there a central location where old records like this would be kept?
Sylvia

yes teaching nursing/caring obviously later War effort as well
not aware of a central location / database - some employer lists are available like GWR
sometimes we are lucky and a newspaper article mentions the person and their occupation, occasionally the probate may mention an occupation
sorry I cant be more help at this moment but now we have a confirmed "target" I will look further

Thank you very much! I really appreciate your help! I should mention that I do already know she worked at the YWCA in Hereford years later. But I have no idea where she worked during the years she was in the Forest and I would really like to know.

At the time of the 1921 Census she was resident at Hurcombe, Great Western Road, Stonehouse, Gloucestershire and her occupation: Clerk at Fredk Winterbotham Esq, Solicitor, Union Offices, John Street, Stroud.
Winterbothams is a well known firm in Stroud and now part of WSP Solicitors.

Chances are, if Hilda had an education and secretarial skills, she would have had an office job. Two of my aunts started work around that time, and one got a job with Watts's of Lydney based on being able to type. The other left school to go into domestic service in Cheltenham, which was very common for young girls from the Forest in those days.
