Spanish connection in Newent (General)
Does anyone know of a Spanish family living in Newent and/or the Forest of Dean around 1870-1900? My great-grandmother was born about 1870 or 1871 and was known as Isabella (Lizzie) Bowery but Bowery or Bowry wasn't her father's name. When she got married in 1893 to Edwin Charles Merrett she gave her birth place as Newent and her father's name as William Bowry but it is now known that her father was Spanish. I found a birth record for a Julia Elizabeth Bowry born 13/11/1871 in Newent, mother Rose Bowry - no father so probably illegitimate and wonder if this is her.
On the census records for 1901, Isabella is down as Elizabeth (is Isabella Spanish for Elizabeth?). One of her daughters remembers going to the Forest of Dean as a small child to stay with a "foreign" woman that she had to call Aunt but she objected because she was Spanish! It was only many years later that her sister told her that the lady was, indeed, her aunt.
Any information on a Spanish connection would be gratefully received.

And there was me thinking I'd got a very quick reply!
Thank you slowhands, I realise that the inhabitants of the FOD look on anyone born even just outside the forest as foreign but I was hoping for it to be a bit further away than that! Surely, being Spanish would create a bit of interest wouldn't it? Any help that anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

I'm so sorry, I should have clicked on the link before I posted the message. I had a quick look but shall have a good read later on as there obviously IS a Spanish connection! Thanks.

SO sorry
-- What me upset ?
being Spanish would create a bit of interest
interest -yes- but I'd guess the "cold shoulder" was shown, with the normal suspicion of outsiders.

Thank you slowhands for that very long list of Merretts. I recognise some of the names so I shall tick them off against my family tree. I just wish there weren't quite so many Edwins!
I was very interested in that link you submitted earlier and would like to know if rbowery managed to find the Citizen article about the Spanish woman as it was known in the family that something had been written about our relative and it would be lovely to find out what it was.
