Parish Records Search Facility (General)

by admin ⌂, Forest of Dean, Friday, August 17, 2007, 06:07 (6373 days ago)

Do you find the current search facility adequate or would you prefer it with
some additional enhancements?

If you do have any ideas that you consider would improve it then please let us
know.

I can't promise that any changes will be made as any additions would have to be
done by a PHP programmer who would have more knowledge on the subject than I
have.

If one day someone comes along in the future who can assist us with any changes,
it would of course be ideal to have it already worked out what we would like and
that is why I am asking for your opinions now.

It would be really useful to be able to search the marriage records with spouse's name as well.

Thank you for all the hard work that goes into this site is is invaluable and so interesting.

I think that perhaps it would be very useful if we were able to search the baptism records using a surname and the parents first names. I find that not all children of some of my ancestors were baptised in the same place so this would definately help in identifying all children of a particular couple.

I enjoy using this website and have found many links to my family tree. Thanks for all you do to maintain this very interesting site.

I do not know if any added information could be added to the burial sites - first names of father or mother or person giving the information about the deceased.
Many times I find a burial record but with so many with the same first name it is hard to determine to what person I should add the burial date. I know the age of the deceased is given but sometimes this does not help.

The transcribed records are just that - "nothing added, nothing taken away"

so unless it was recorded in the register, the search facility will not be able to find it - sorry.

The older the record typically the "lighter" the information given, e.g. the UK census taken before 1841 was basically a head count, 1841 recorded names but no relationships, 1851 started to record relationships in households,...

The trick is building up multiple pieces of evidence to support your research and "branch", i.e. census data, parish records, family bible, family artefacts etc

Hi from a newbie to the board....

The Parish records is a GREAT feature and has helped to confirm most of my reasearch.

Wife (Dawn) is a Forrester and her family [Taylor/Morgan] have been in the forest for almost ever!

Only suggestion is a 'printer friendly format' sub page.

Keep u[p the good work :-)

Cheers
Bernie

Printer Friendly Version of the page

I've just added a Printer Friendly link on the bottom of the Transcript Details pages.

This takes away the grahics and headers on the page and you are left with just the deatils which you can then print.

Also, a small change has been made on the search form page where I've added a 20 year plus and minus range.

Hi Admin
Because I don't know anything about this area it would be nice to see the area Ancestors lived correspond with Parishes and Registration for Births, Deaths, Marriages

For example My Ancestors came from the Joyford area and I believe it is the Parish of Christchurch area I have to look. I have had a little help from your members but it would be nice for any newcomers to know where they are looking.

Perhaps you could have another link with place names and Parish
i.e Joyford in the Parish of Christchurch

I hope you understand what I mean.
Thank you
Kind Regards

Hi Again Admin
Please disregard my last message I was just having a look at the Maps and realized it gave the Parishes when you run your cursor over the pins.
Sorry about that. As you can see I am new to all this and haven't a clue what I am doing lol
Thanks
Kind Regards

Hello David

Thank you and all the others who have created and are maintaining this wonderful site.

You asked for suggestions for searching the Parish Records. It would be very helpful to be able to search and retrieve records for any name recorded in the transcript including parents names and witnesses. Also to use the operator AND in order to refine the search. This information can help verify if the transcript for a baptism or marriage is the correct record - there are so many identical names of individuals who lived in the Forest of Dean. As the database increases in size it would be helpful to be able to refine the search.

Thank you once again for your dedicated work.

Is there any way that when searching for a particular surname in the marriage search, witnesses at other weddings having the same surname you are searching for could be listed.

Sue

Sorry to report but there is no way of doing what you mentioned. Even if it was possible it would return thousands of records in many instances which would make the search meaningless.
