Davis & Meek Farmers of Ruardean (General)

by monfamilies, Sunday, December 30, 2007, 07:10 (6242 days ago)

I am doing some research on a Davis family that farmed in the parish of Cwmcarvan Monmouthshire in the mid 1800's, they are the family of John Davis & Lydia Meek from Ruardean married Newland 1822.

Is anyone researching these families.

I am also having problems finding John & Lydia on the 1851 census, John died 1860 Cwmcarvan and buried Ruardean and Lydia died 1867.

I guess these are at least some of their children born in Ruardean and Walford

Davis & Meek Farmers of Ruardean

by kristeenL27 @, Tuesday, March 17, 2009, 02:08 (5799 days ago) @ monfamilies

Hi Mike,

Not sure if you are still researching the Davis and Meek families, but I have only just come across your post!

In my tree, I have Elizabeth Davis [born around 1801] marrying a George Meek [born around 1801] on 1st June 1818 in Cwmcarven - does this fit in with anything you have?

If you could confirm this, it would help me enormously, since I have been trying to find George and Elizabeth's respective parents for some time!

I am researching the history of my house in Ruardean, Glos, and John and Lydia Davis owned it. http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=40864 There is a Davis connection in Ruardean certainly back to c. 1800 as John's father, also John owned our house previous to his son. At the time the elder John owned the property it was a public house called the Crown Inn.

There is a deed in the Gloucester Records Office which refers to our property in 1756, but I have yet to go in and locate it.

When I have some time this week or next I shall go into the 1861 title deed for our property which mentions the farm that the Davis family worked in the 1850s in Cwmcarvan. The indenture is signed by both John and Lydia.

Best wishes

Campbell

think there is a link to my tree here.... see my posts re old croft ... To add to all of Slowhands brilliant research for you, http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=40334 George Meek married Eliza Davis 1 Jun 1818 Cwmcarvan, Monmouthshire. 6 children in all Eliza Meek 1818 married Luke Roberts;Thomas Meek 1821 married Louisa Baylis; Maria Meek 1825 died 1826; Elizabeth Meek 1831; William Meek 1833; George Meek 1835 married Mary Ann Jenkins 1857.

George Meek died 1843 age 54 in burial record not consistant with 1841 census but possible parents are Thomas Meek & Sarah Moorfield [Marfell]? married 1789 Newland.

After George death Elizabeth married Thomas Lewis both widows 16 Sep 1844, incidently this is same date so likely double marriage of Thomas to Louisa Baylis.

Hope this extra data is helpful, if anyone can confirm that George is son of Thomas & Sarah I would much appreciate this.

Alice

I too would appreciate confirmation that George was the son of Thomas Meek & Sarah Marfell, he was certainly the son of "a" Thomas Meek & Sarah, being baptised to parents of that name on 2nd Sept 1792 at Ruardean.

My main interest is the Marfell family. Early records show a variety of spellings going back to the 1500's, with Moorfield & Marfield the most common early spelling.

Sarah Marfell's parents were one of my 5 times great grandparents John Marfell 1731/1799 & Lucy Meek 1743/1823, she being daughter of George Meek 1714 & Martha Teague 1718/1745.

I had only recorded 8 children for Thomas Meek & Sarah Marfell - Lydia, Phebe (1795), Jane, Sarah, Ann, Susanna, Jeremy & Lucy (1813). Phebe Meek 1795/1862 my 1st cousin 5 times removed married another 1st cousin 5 times removed Jonathon Marfell 1795/1869

Sophia 21 Hope Mansell
Sarah 19 Hope Mansell
James Wm 17 Hope Mansell
Lucy 15 Hope Mansell
James Brother 54 East Dean
Mary Dove niece 12 Mitcheldean

1861 Census Hawthornes Hope Mansell
Jonathon Marfell 66 East Dean farmer 27 acres
Phebe 66 Ruardean
Sophia 31 Hope Mansell
Jonathon Trigg grandson 5 East Dean
James Marfell brother 64 East Dean

Lucy Meek 1813 married Thomas Meek 1812 son of Thomas Meek :

1841 census Ruardean Hill
Thos Meek Age: 29
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1812
Gender: Male
Where born: Gloucestershire, England
Civil parish: Dean Forest
Hundred: St Briavells
Piece: 364 Book: 7 Folio: 18 Page Number: 7
Household Members:
Thos Meek 29
Thos Meek 8mths
Lucy Meek 28
Mary Meek 4

Before marrying Thomas Meek, Lucy Meek 1813 had an illegitimate child Mary Meek 1837 who became my 2nd cousin 4 times removed. Mary Meek married my 4th cousin 4 times removed David Jones Brain 1848 on 12 Sep 1874 Forest Church. They had 2 children, one of whom Emily Ellen Brain 1876 married Thomas George Meek 1877 son of James Meek 1848/1918 & Rececca Shapscott 1850/1935. Yet more Meeks for you to investigate, I have 797 in my Family Tree.

Davis & Meek Farmers of Ruardean

Further to my previous entry. I had another look at the 1841 Census entry provided by slowhands, which shows a George Meek 1796 plus Ann 1796, with Sarah 1766.

1841 Ruardean Hill
Geoe Meek abt 1796 Gloucestershire, England Dean Forest Gloucestershire
Ann Meek abt 1796 Gloucestershire, England Dean Forest Gloucestershire
Ann Meek abt 1806 Gloucestershire, England Dean Forest Gloucestershire
Sarah Meek abt 1766 Gloucestershire, England Dean Forest Gloucestershire
Thos Dalimon abt 1821 Gloucestershire, England Dean Forest Gloucestershire

Unfortunately the 1841 Census was not only "vague" in terms of ages, sometimes taken to nearest 5 years, it did not specify relationships.

What is interesting is that next door to George Meek 1796 was Thomas Meek & Lucy. This is the Lucy who was the daughter of the late Thomas J Meek & Sarah nee Marfell. I paste below the census entry from my previous posting :

1841 census Ruardean Hill
Thos Meek Age: 29
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1812
Gender: Male
Where born: Gloucestershire, England
Civil parish: Dean Forest
Hundred: St Briavells
Piece: 364 Book: 7 Folio: 18 Page Number: 7
Household Members:
Thos Meek 29
Thos Meek 8mths
Lucy Meek 28
Mary Meek 4

Checking the Parish Records again, I now think that George Meek baptised 2nd Sept 1792 is the son of Thomas J Meek & Sarah nee Marfell, but wonder if he married an Ann and not Eliza Davis as you have suggested.

Perhaps someone (hoping Slowhands reads this) can give an opinion.
