Lemuel PACE,1856 George. Alice BLANCH-emmigration to U.S. (reply)

I have been researching the Pace family from Pennsylvania, United States to West Dean.
I thought I'd share some useful information that I came across online about Lemuel Pace and his family in a book entitled: "Genealogical and Personal History of Western Pennsylvania, Volume 1" by John Woolf Jordan (1915).
pg 296-297:

"The history of the Pace family is entirely English, there being but one mature generation of the name American-born. William, father of Lemuel Pace, was born in Liverpool, England and after his marriage in that place moved to Gloucestershire, where he followed his trade, that of stone-cutter, until his death. He married Fannie Jordan, a native of Liverpool, England, died in Gloucestershire, England, and had children, all of whom remained in England with the exception of Lemuel and George: Lizzie; Mary; George, immigrated to the United States and at last report of his whereabouts was in Missouri; Annie; Sarah; Alice; Lemuel, of whom further; William; Emma; Fannie; James.

(II) Lemuel Pace, son of William and Fannie (Jordan) Pace, was born in Gloucestershire, England, June 19, 1856. After attending the public schools he began an apprenticeship at his father's trade, but not finding it to his liking abandoned it in favor of mining and teaming. After his marriage he came to the United States, immigrating in the spring of 1880, settling first at McDonald, Pennsylvania, where he was employed as a coal miner, an occupation with which he was familiar through his service in the mines of his native land. He was then a resident of Hanlon, Pennsylvania for about three years, at the end of that time moving to Carnegie, Pennsylvania, in that place following for a time his former calling, but soon establishing in the grocery business on Main street, in which line he continued for eighteen years, at the same time building up a business in general teaming. His latter venture attained dimensions which he felt justified him in giving his entire time and attention, and he disposed of his grocery business and since that time has been engaged in teaming exclusively, employing on an average, five men and having five teams in almost constant use. In 1905 Mr Pace erected a buff brick house on Third Avenue, his present residence, his extensive yard and stable in the rear affording ample accomodations for his horses and equipment in the Home Guards of America and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Mr. Pace married in England, June 25, 1878, Alice, born in Gloucestershire, England, March 27, 1858, daughter of Thomas and Emma (Roberts) Blanch, who was reared by her maternal grandparents until the death of Grandmother Roberts, when she returned to her father's home and there lived until her marriage. Thomas was a son of William Blanch, a native and life-long resident of England, and was born, as was his wife, in Gloucesershire, England, there growing to maturity and marrying. Their home was near those of their parents, and he was employed in the mines. His first wife, Emma, was a daughter of William and Sarah Roberts, natives and life-long residents of Gloucestershire, England; she died in 1867, and he married a second time, his second wife being Edith Howell, both living in England at the present time (1914). Children of the first marriage of Thomas Blanch: 1. Alice, of previous mention, married Lemuel Pace. 2. Henry, accompanied his sister, Alice, and his brother-in-law, Lemuel Pace, to the United States, and now resides in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. Children of the second marriage of Thomas Blanch: Ada, Lily, Gertrude, James, Sidney, and Thomas, all residents of England. Lemuel and Alice (Blanch) Pace have had nine children, four of whom are living at the present time: 1. Blanch, married Frank Connelly, and resides in Pittsburgh, the mother of four children: Eugene, Thomas, Blanche, and Walter. 2. James, lives in Glendale, Pennsylvania, associated in business with his father; married Mary Lyden and has two children, Joseph and Mary 3. Emma, lives at home. 4. Marie, lives at home."

Hi Linda, not sure where you're from or what you know of Forest towns, pardon me if I'm teaching you to suck eggs.

Coalway is a "suburb" if you like of the town of Coleford. Originally called Coalway Lane End. It was a separate village, but as Coleford expanded it's been more-or-less swallowed up. My sister lives in Coalway, but apart from that its ok...

The nearest Workhouses to Coleford are Monmouth, then Ross(on Wye), Westbury On Severn etc. Why do you think this, do you need workhouse info ?.

PACE Family of Forest of Dean (Beverstone) (reply)

I thank everyone who has helped me here. I really do appreciate it!
I think this website is fantastic and I have been a member for a long time, but never posted, I just read and researched.
But now I finally hit a brick wall and refuse to give up on this Pace line.
Here's why...
I have talked with The Pace Society and submitted DNA testing from 1 of the 2 remaining male Pace's of this line in the United States. DNA testing came up with no matches, which means that this is a new, undiscovered English-American 'Pace' line (other Pace lines have been traced to America) which I find fascinating! However, it has made my search, at times, very difficult, but I do love a challenge!! and it feels so good when I'm able to plow through one of these 'roadblocks' with research.

If anyone else thinks of anything, or someplace I should look, I'd love to hear about it!
I am in the process of doing more research about Beverstone and the surrounding areas, to figure out the character of the area, the parish's, the people....
hopefully that will help me. This Thomas Pace seems so elusive!!

Thanks again everyone!!
Linda Pace

PACE Family of Forest of Dean (Beverstone) (reply)

Thomas and Ann seem to be likely parents! Thank you!! I have been doing a bit more reading about Beverstone because of the difficulty in finding records there. To find out the character of the community in the time period I'm searching, the parishes and what not.
One thing I have found is the spelling of the name in transcribed records (of various family members) is often 'Pacey' or 'Pike'

Thank you for helping. I appreciate it alot! I have seen this record, I wish the groom's mother's name was listed as well, but I'll have to keep working with Thomas as the father. I wonder if people, back then, would tend to stay in the same area for long periods of time?

Ahh, I wondered where/what Beverstone was !
Wonder if this is a case of confusion between Westbury on Severn aka FoD and Westbury on Trym aka Bristol or Westbury Wiltshire ?

That said the Marriage Records tie up...and possibly several subsequent generations of William Paces in FoD.

Searching Laterday Saints site I only find ONE entry for William Pace in Gloucestershire and none for Thomas:
