Hi Rosie,
welcome to this great forum and website. The database of photos, Parish Records etc is easily searchable free-of-charge, heres a start.
You don't give dates which would help, but clciking on the Parish Records blue button at top of page allows you to search the PRs, firstly input "John Roberts".
This gives 546 individual Records across the FoD area !!
Now input "Woolaston" as the Parish, presumably; gives just 3 PRs, as follows:
I guess this MAY be your grandfather ?
Record_ID: 74340
Entry_Number: 759
Year: 1842
Month: Dec
Day: 4
Parents_Surname: ROBERTS
Child_Forenames: John

Notes:

From this can search for parents William & Charlotte, gives:

Sadly no conformation or otherwise wrt their occupations ?.
Now searching "William Roberts", there are 5 PRs on the site within Woolaston, although of course they may have moved to other parishes.
This may be the same William:

Hi jeff
Thank you for your information. greatly received. As I have only just started my fathers side and didn't know much about my grandfather it is really good to go back further. It would be amazing to come across relatives connected. looking at the brothers and sisters maybe there are some distant relatives alive?
Thank you againie

Hi again Rosie,
as suggested before, have you used the search facilities on this site ?.
If not go to the Home Page and the "search" icon is at the bottom of the lefthand menu, this searches the whole site, forum, photos etc.
Entering "watermen" gives a few hits that may be of interest
eg http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=21922
is a particularly interesting thread.
Similarly "fisherman" eg gives
http://www.forest-of-dean.net/gallery/blakeney/pages/page_18.html
Also "fishermen" gives
http://www.forest-of-dean.net/gallery/blakeney/pages/page_18.html
I recall you're looking at Woolaston area.
Suggest searching the site for Woolaston too,
eg http://www.forest-of-dean.net/search_engine/search_photos_results_2.php?q=woolaston&...
Hope this helps a little.

Woolaston Waterman: Severn OR Wye ?
by Jefff , West London, Middlesex, Saturday, September 24, 2011, 15:54 (4805 days ago) @ Jefff
One of my "stock" reference sites is the British History site which is easily searched.
Entering "Woolaston" and "watermen" gives the following hit, if you track down the extensive texts the search "hits" are highlighted green.
Interestingly, perhaps, until now I'd always assumed we were discussing Severn watermn, with Woolaston village being on said river.
HOWEVER I now see that during the mid 1800s, as we're discussing, Woolaston PARISH was extended to include parts of the lower Wye at Brockweir etc.
Do you know whether your John Roberts is actually in Woolaston aka Severn, or could he be a Wye waterman ??.

Hi again Rosie, Happy New Year to you and yours.
As much as I sincerely hope you do find some more Roberts' via this forum I'm beginning to doubt you will. That said have you tried actively searching for & emailing other Roberts forum users, see the attached list of Roberts surname researchers, hopefully some of them still have active direct email addresses.
http://www.forest-of-dean.net/surnames/php/do_search.php?page=1&surname=roberts
I don't know where you're writing from, but have you tried alternative methods which may be more likely to succeed ?. I suggest studying the local Phone directories (although sadly not as useful these days as they used to be with so many not using BT), they should be available thro most UK libraries. Also how about writing open letters or placing adverts within the local FoD newspapers, probably the Lydney ones ?
http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=17318)?.
I hope this helps and meanwhile good luck !
(No doubt this will prompt a flood of Roberts' posts here, I do hope so)

HI
If I want to find my ancestors graves where do I start. I am looking for any Roberts relatives from Woolaston/Lydney? My grandfather was a fisherman. It would be also interesting to see if anyone else is trying to locate the Roberts family?
What church yards I go to and also where could I find this information out?
Thanks

For location of graves at St Mary's Lydney, have a look at www.gfhs.org.uk/products.htm. For a fiver you get the memorial inscriptions. If my memory is right, I also got a CD and map of the grave locations from GFHS (Gloucestershire Family History Society) who are right next door to the county archives in Alvin Street, Gloucester. If I were you, I wouldn't go to the churchyard beforehand, as part of it has been designated a conservation area which is code for "You'll never find what you're looking for unless you hack your way in." I found out where my family's memorial was but couldn't get to read it until two relatives who still live in Lydney had put in a great deal of labour.
