In most Australian states you can purchase (by credit card) a copy of an entry or access to an image that you can download. There are restrictions on the dates at which the details become available, typically 100 years for births, 75 years for marriages and 30-50 years for deaths.
Several of the states now have warnings against using an organisation called "Certificate Express" for example:

The Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages has recently been notified about an online service named "Certificate Express".
“Certificate Express” is not endorsed or affiliated in any way with the Victorian Registry. The Victorian Registry does not provide services through this organisation.
Official Victorian birth, death and marriage certificates can ONLY be obtained from the Victorian Registry. We recommend customers ONLY use certificate application forms available from this website.

My personal experience with NSW has been most satisfactory - similarly with New Zealand where one request for certificate details was delivered to the UK in less than a week.

Thank you for the reply.I am trying to find my way round the website at the moment.I understand that I have to buy the Index Number for the death I require. Is this correct.I understand it is advisable to put $5 in first. Will it automatically charge my Mastercard in Pound Sterling etc.
Also I do not have a printer at the moment so will I be able to order a Historical Certificate without one.Sorry I am so used to the ease of buying British Certs.
Once again thank you. With regards Rita.

Hi Rita
It's looks as though you will be searching the Victoria State records and it seems that their website wants you to pay to view the index pages (though each page is only 99cents they suggest you limit the payment to a maximum of $5). This will get charged back to your card in sterling.
In your case I suggest you refine the search with as much detail as you can to limit the number of entries that it finds before paynig or viewing anything.
I am not familiar with what then happens with this state - hopefully you will be able to see enough detail to allow you to make some progress. You can always save a copy of anything displayed on the screen even if you can't print it.
Regards

Thank you for your answer.I really need to tie up this side of my family. My 3x times Gt Grandmother sounded a remarkable lady. She followed one of her sons to Australia after he was transported in 1846 for seven years.her other son & daughter also went, leaving my 2x Gt Grandmother, who was already married,in England.Fascinating.They are all buried in a cemetery in Ballarat,Victoria.
With regards R McLean.

Hi Rita
BMDs in Australia are handled at State level so, unfortunately, the way you search and purchase is differernt for each State. Victorian historical certificates can, indeed, be purchased on-line for $AU17.50 and are an image of the original is downloaded direct to your computer. Australian certificates usually have much more detail than the UK ones I have purchased - so long as the informant gives the correct information. Yes, you do need the register number for Vic certs.
May I recommend Rootschat forum to you. The Australia Board of Rootschat has some wonderful friendly researchers who have a wealth of knowledge and access to CDs etc which they are only too willing to share - gets a bit competitive to be first to give information sometimes! Someone will be able to give you the registration number of your lady, saving you the 99c page search fee. I would be very surprised if there is not lots of information they find about your g-grandmother.
Like this forum, anyone can read; register to post and it's free.
As to the agencies offering to obtain certificates, NSW does have three approved transcription agents whose details are listed on the NSW BMD site - in NSW using a transcription agent is cheaper and quicker than buying from the Government office.
