Thomas Stevens 1809 Hartpury (General)
by unknown, Thursday, October 13, 2011, 11:14 (4786 days ago)
I'm researching the Stevens family who were in The Forest of Dean in the 18th and 19th Century. My great great Grandfather was Thomas Stevens, born in 1809 and baptised in Hartpury on 23rd. July 1809.
His father was another Thomas and his mother was Ann.
This is where the trail runs out and any help would be enormously appreciated!!
With thanks,
David Stevens

Hi David, welcome to this wonderful resource & PR database.
Clearly your g-g-grandfather:

When searching the PRs it's worth using the Advanced Search facility, have you tried it ?.
eg I can search for all Baptism Records for all the Thomas & Ann Stevens on the database, giving 33 in total. Note they include name variations eg Anne and Hannah. Some of the earliest date from 1712 and are not too far away in Ledbury, but I suggest those most relevant to you are from Ashleworth/Hartpury as follows:
283211 1746 STEVENS Thomas, Thomas & Hannah, Ashleworth
283239 1749 STEVENS James, Thomas & Hannah, Ashleworth
165062 1809 STEVENS Thomas, Thomas & Ann, Hartpury (clearly "your" Thomas)
165102 1811 STEVENS Emanuel, Thomas & Ann, Hartpury (probable sibling?)
294014 1825 STEVENS Ann, Thomas & Ann, Wall Hills Division, Gamekeeper, Ledbury
272040 1857 STEVENS Ellen, Thomas & Ann, Hartpury, Labourer, Hartpury
If you repeat this search you can "open" particular PRs to gain more details.
Its also worth looking for STEPHENS, a common derivative, giving:
101268 1821 STEPHENS Frances Ann, Thomas & Ann, Town of Newent, Baker, Newent
101281 1821 STEPHENS Francis Ann, Thomas & Ann, [not stated], [not stated], Newent
Similarly using Advanced Search for possible Marriages, I suggest these may be relevant:
1010895 1605 STEVENS Thomas, BIRCKE Anne, Gloucester St John the
Baptist
48357 1675 STEVENS Thomas, PARKER Ann, Bromsberrow
72202 1760 STEVENS Thomas Castlemorton HILL, Anne Longdon Longdon
72209 1762 STEVENS Thomas Castlemorton HILL, Anne Longdon Longdon
105051 1776 STEVENS Thomas of this parish, COOKE Ann of the parish of St.
Michael in the city, Gloucester St Aldate
(Bromsberrow & less-so Longdon are a few miles North of Hartpury towards Ledbury). I think these are more likely;
24481 1745 STEPHENS Thomas, PROSSOR Hannah, Newent
70136 1753 STEPHENS Thomas Hasfield, TURNER Ann Hasfield, Hasfield
115823 1792 STEPHENS Thomas Gloucester, FREEMAN Anne Gloucester, Gloucester St Michael
113241 1794 STEPHENS Thomas St John the Baptist Parish, BARNWOOD Ann St John the Baptist
Parish, Gloucester St John the Baptist
110895 1797 STEPHENS Thomas of this Parish, WILKINS Ann of the same Parish, Gloucester St Nicholas
Again, this search can be repeated for possible Burial Records.
CLEARLY, nothing absolutely concrete here, these are just pointers for consideration, but hopefully will help in your research.
Good luck.
PS As per my email earlier, don't forget to search the rest of this great site apart from the PRs section. For example within the Documents section are the Bigland Transcripts including Hartpury, Ashleworth amongst many others. All worth viewing I suggest.

I'd just like to say 'as a new boy to this Forum' how helpful members have been. The upside is all the information you have provided, the downside is it will probably take fifty years to go through it all - I've started!
I think I have e-mailed all who posted replies, if I've missed anyone - my aplologies,
Thanks all!!!!

Thank you for the e-mail. 'My' Thomas Stevens I have as base born son of Jemima Stevens born 1810, christened at Flaxley. He married Maria Hughes from Minety and they went later to live at 32, Cricklade Street, Cirencester. Son Thomas was nine years old when shown as a nailmaker. All this is, of course as usual, open for discussion but I am as sure as I can be that this is my line. Hope this might be of some help.

You have cracked it! - I worked out my previous link was not right but was unsure where to go, you have solved this particular problem - brilliant!! Yes, it's my family too and runs in a direct line through to the present day, down to my grand son Logan Stevens who is rising two!
I've plenty of information and pics of my Grand Dad Frank (who was Thomas and Maria's grandson and went through the First War. You are more than welcome to all and any of this, just drop me an e-mail.
Thanks a million, you are a star!!

Hi jmay,
please be advised that its unwise to post any personal details such as email addresses on any internet forum, I suggest you delete your details asap. I know we are friendly decent people on here but this forum and it's threads are open to viewing to anyone around the world. Sadly some people including criminals use software to look for such things with a view to sending junk emails and even worse wrt your private details such as bank access. Although not via this forum I've had a pc harddrive irrepairably damaged due to a similar very brief yet highly damaging scam attack from such criminal activities, I wouldn't wish the resultant personal damage and loss of personal information on anyone (except the culprits that is!).
If you click on a the envelope icon next to a forum user's name you will access the private direct contact form. Please use this to send private information as this will go direct into t'other users home email inbox and not onto the forum.
I've used this facility to send this message to your inbox too, you may well see that too, perhaps even before this post.
This direct email system is also worth using if users are struggling to contact other forum users via these threads; you can see what that person's activity has been on the forum so gauge whether they're a regular user hence the likelihood they'll see your posts. http://www.forest-of-dean.net/?Help_FAQ_General_FAQ#faq6
Hope this helps, its great to see your Stevens research linking nicely with David.

Hi David...looking at your posting of 2011
I descend from Emanuel Stephens b about 1811 Hartpury, all I have is his parents as Thomas Stephens and Ann
Emanuel Stephens was born abt 1911 Hartpury and died (death record) 24 Nov 1853 Woolridge. He was a bricklayer, and married an Elizabeth Hiam. (bricklayer family)
Their daughter Elizabeth married or lived common law to Charles Blick a plasterer in Gloucester. They split and she raised her only son under the name Stephens, although he was registered as Alfred William Blick.
Any more info on Emanuel Stephens/Stevens and his ancestry would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Brian, welcome to this great website and forum !
I suggest it's unlikely David will see your post, as he's not visited the forum for since January. However if he's still using the same home email address you may still be able to contact him straight to his pc Inbox, without him having to see your forum post. If you click on his blue username, you'll see it hyperlinks to a usefull page that shows his forum activity, and also an envelope icon for you to send him a direct mail. Hopefully that will help you.
Meanwhile please carry on using this website, there's so much to see, plus the forum of course.

May I suggest you experiment using this site's great Advanced Search feature when searching the PRs. This allows minimum info to be input, eg can input just "St" to get all variations of Stevens spelling. Using this to search all Baptisms for "Th" & "An" "St" gives this brother for Emanuel, as per the earlier posts;

Hello Brian,
Many thanks for getting in touch, greetings from England at the beginning of Fall.
Since you read that particular thread I have, thanks to jmay (you will see her input also)been able to accurately trace our particular Stevens line. Our Thomas was son of Jemima Stevens and he was christened at Flaxley and later married Maria Hughes. The family moved out of The Forest and my line went to Cirencester and thence on to me and my present family. I'm afraid we are therefore different Stevens lines, so sorry.
Good luck with it all Brian, it sure does become addictive!!
All the best - David
