Isaac HULIN family St Briavels (General)
I am looking for information on the Hulin's from St Briavel's. I would be very grateful for any information other members could give me. My great grandfather was Isaac (1840-1901) and I believe his father was also Isaac (1791-1875)but I don't know beyond that.

Isaac HULIN family St Briavels
Isaac HULIN is my great great grandfather.
His daughter Sophia born 1836 married John THOMAS born 1825.
Ann THOMAS born 1874 the daughter of John and Sophia is my grandmother.
I have most of the HULIN family tree and quite a lot of information regarding Isaac HULIN
I would very much like to find out the parents of Mary MOULTON who married Isaac HULIN.

Hi Jo
Thanks so much for this which is really helpful. Fascinated to hear that your 4xG Grandparents were the witnesses. As you say it would be interesting to try and work out how Isaac and Orpheus were related. As a matter of interest have you visited St Briavel's? I have seen several references on the ancestry websites of a Donald Hulin who lives in Cleveden near Bristol. Apparently he has traced the Hulins back to the 1200's. Have you also heard of him?

Dear Austyn
Thanks so much for your reply to my message. Very interested to hear that Isaac senior was your great great grandfather also. Do you know if there were other siblings beside Sophia and Isaac (junior), my great grandfather? I would be fascinated to know more about Isaac and about his parents and grandparents. Any information you have would be very gratefully received. Equally if I find anything out about Mary Moulton I will pass it on. Thanks again.
Regards
Caroline

Isaac HULIN family St Briavels
The George in St. Briavels does some great food lol, I have been known to sample on a few occasions - I only live a few miles away in Lydney! My thinking on the matter is that Isaac was first cousin to my Orpehus. Orpheus's father was William and I am leaning towards his brother George being Isaac's father. I have George as being married to a Elizabeth George. I note that this appears to match with the info that Don Cameron gave.

Isaac HULIN family St Briavels
Hello Caroline
As a child I lived on St Briavels Common in a house that was probably built by the Hulin family and only a few hundred yards from the house where Isaac Hulin and his wife Mary, nee Moulton spent most of their married life.
I also know where Isaac lived when young but would need to send you a map.
Perhaps you could contact me by email

HULIN/MOLTON family St Briavels
Thank you for the information you sent regarding the HULIN/MOULTON family at St Briavels.
I was already aware that Isaac HULIN was a witness at the second marriage of Anselm MOULTON to Sarah WATKINS in 1817
but I did not know that Isaac was a witness to the wedding of Robert WOODWARD and Ann MOULTON in 1818.
In the will of Isaac HULIN senior, he left a sum of money, if my memory is correct £5.00, to Sarah MOULTON nee WATKINS who
was buried age 93 at St Briavels in 1883 her residence being stated as being within the Hudnalls which is where Isaac HULIN and his wife Mary HULIN nee MOULTON lived.
I think these three facts suggest that Anselm/Ansel MOULTON was the father of Mary HULIN nee MOULTON.
Anselm MOLTON son of Anselm MOLTON is recorded on the 1851 census as living in St Briavels with his wife Charlotte, but I cannot find any marriage to check if Isaac was a witness.
Thanks again for your help

Isaac HULIN family St Briavels
Hi Jo
Great recommendation and I will definitely give it a try, as my husband and I plan to visit St Briavel's, hopefully before the year is out. All very new and revelatory to me as I hardly know the Forest of Dean, except that my Father, Hubert Hulin's sister Kit and her husband lived in Lydney and we spent Christmas there in 1954 when I was seven. From the little memory that I have, it is a beautiful area that you live in.
Well done on working out the relationship of Orpheus and Isaac (don't you just love the names they were given!) and it sounds very plausible that their Father were brothers.
Don Cameron has been most helpful with the information that he has sent.
Kind regards
Caroline

Hi
Thank you, this is helpful. So Henry would have been the older brother to my Grandfather Albert I believe. Am I right that the other siblings were William, Mary, Ada and May?

Hi Petrina
This is great, thank you, and I can now fit another piece into the puzzle! You may already know this but Albert married Catherine (Kate)Helps and their children were (I think) Frederick, Catherine (Kit), Ivy and Hubert (my Father). Funnily enough it has been harder to find information about my Aunts and Uncles that it has about Great Grandfathers etc. This being due to the information not being passed on in the family and a lack of Census to cover that period.
Kind regards
Caroline

Caroline T. asked about Don Hulin from Clevedon. If you don't know how to contact him, send me a personal message. I don't believe he would want me to post his email address, but he is friendly toward inquiries within the family.
Isaac HULIN family St Briavels
Hi Richard
Thank you very much for your reply to my posting and for offering to put me in touch with Don Hulin. In fact, Don Cameron in Australia kindly gave me his email a few weeks ago and Don has been very helpful. He has even helped me to get in touch with a first cousin.
Out of interest, do you descend from Isaac born 1791 or from another branch of the Hulins of St Briavels?.
With kind regards and thanks again for the offer of help.
Caroline

We don't know for sure who our British ancestors were, nor is our line connected by solid documentation to the first Hulin who appears in Virginia records. That's why we have started a Y-DNA project for the Hulin family. I posted about it on the thread here that's headed "Does our DNA come from our ancestors?" For reference, here is the project (but please look at my other recent post):
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Hul_n_/default.aspx
The Y-DNA signature that we have determined is virtually unique to our family in America has only four close parallels worldwide (among people who have tested to date, in public databases) -- and of those, the only two of British background come from elsewhere in the Severn River valley and estuary (several members of a Hall family, and one man named Brown). This is one reason we think the Forest of Dean Hulins are more likely to be our relatives than some other Hulins -- found elsewhere in England, but rather later.
The other families whose DNA is somewhat similar (they are probably in the same subclade of a much larger haplogroup) are from Poland and France, respectively. It appears that we are something of a remnant population that has been around NW Europe since the Bronze Age, roughly 4,500 years ago -- before which time, they came from somewhere farther east. This is still a bit speculative, but the science is progressing very rapidly now.
Genetic genealogy sometimes works at a level so deep, it is of more interest to anthropologists than to family historians. Be that as it may, it proves kinship in a way that traditional paper documentation cannot. And it breaks through the proverbial brick walls for people whose paper trail is interrupted by uncontrollable events (adoption, wartime destruction of records, and emigration, among many others). We would like to determine whether we have Forest of Dean ancestry, and we could prove that by matching our unusual baseline Y-DNA with someone from your Hulin family. (We didn't match Donald from Clevedon -- but so far nobody else in your family has tested to match him, either.)

Dear Caroline
I am an academic at King's College London and came across your thread on Isaac Hulin.
I am not related to the Hulins but carry out research on wealth and investment in 19th century Britain. Isaac Hulin, one of your ancestors, is in my database which is drawn largely from a series of Inland Revenue papers held at the National Archives (IR19 and IR26).
Isaac died with an estate worth about £387 comprising mostly real estate in St Briavels. He left his estate to his children, George Hulin, Emma Jones, Philip Hulin, Mary Ann Adams, Sarah Williams, Charles Hulin, Sophia Thomas, and Isaac Hulin. He was 83 when he died. His executor was
There is further information on his estate in the IR19 series at the National Archives - referenec IR19/152/3256. There is a list of his freehold property attached to the IR19 form.
I hope this helps fill one or two gaps.
As part of my research I have been looking at over 3000 individuals in the taxation records in which Isaac appears, and I will shortly be focussing more on a smaller group of individuals for which other records exist, notably personal papers relating to land, property and wealth. If you are aware of any papers that relate to Isaac of this nature, I'd be very interested to hear about them.
