Thomas Yemm 1846 & Eliza Meek 1845 (General)

by jimashton @, Thursday, October 20, 2011, 15:59 (4779 days ago)

I received an email from someone who had been following the thread about George Abell 1814 :
http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?mode=thread&id=31097

The correspondent thought she was descended from Amos Baldwin Yemm 1819/1891 & Rebecca Marfell 1816, via their son Thomas Yemm 1846 & Eliza Meek 1845, thence via their son Sidney 1863, however Thomas Yemm 1846 & Eliza Meek 1845 did not marry until 10 Mar 1866 Cinderford, and as far as I know had no son Sydney.

I did some research on her behalf and passed on that I believe that - her - Sydney 1863 is the son of another Thomas Yemm born 1829 baptised 29 Mar 1829 son of James Yemm a Mason and Mary. I included the parish record for this Thomas Yemm's marriage to Eliza Griffin on 10 Dec 1861 and included a copy of their 1871 Census entry, including Sydney 1863. The 1861 marriage between Thomas & Eliza Griffin was a second marriage for this Thomas Yemm so I included details of his first marriage to Eliza James on 2 April 1853.

This is a long winded approach to my question, but it is important to show that there are two Thomas Yemm & Eliza's to confuse any research. Obviously before I passed on information that changed her ancestry, I wanted to be certain of my own information, which leads - at last you say - to my question.

I cannot find Thomas Yemm 1846 & Eliza Meek 1845 on UK census with children Frank 1867, Oliver 1869, Clara 1870, Ada 1871, Ernest Joseph 1877 & Arthur 1879. Thomas Yemm 1847's brother Timothy Yemm born 27 May 1847 emigrated to IL. USA, so it is possible that Thomas 1846 did too. Perhaps Dewey can check for me.

Here are Thomas & Timothy Yemm in 1851 & 1861 :

1851 Census East Dean
YEMM Amos 32 Coal Miner East Dean
Rebecca 54 East Dean
Thomas 4 East Dean
Timothy 3 East Dean
Miriam 10m East Dean
GARDINER John Lodger 16 Coal Miner Walford

1861 Census East Dean
RG9 1755 290
Amos 42 Coal Miner East Dean
Rebecca 44 East Dean
Thomas 14 Coal Miner East Dean
Timothy 12 Coal Miner East Dean
Mirrium 10 East Dean

Thomas Yemm 1846 & Eliza Meek 1845

Jim,
Sorry but I have no info on this branch of the Yemm family although I suspect there is a connection if I could get far enough back.
The Timothy that is of interest to me is, Timothy baptised 7 December, 1828 in Abinghall, father William.
I am a first cousin three times removed to him. He imigrated to Ohio, USA and was the reason that my grandfather came to Ohio when he imigrated.
By the way both Timothy and my grandfather are in the group of Yemms who changed to Bosley as a surname.

Thanks for your 2 replies CJK136

I had previously been unable to find Thomas 1846 & Eliza Meek, but have now found them in Ancestry at Worksop in 1871.

One of my worries had been the children, as whilst I had baptism details for the children I have attributed to (my) Thomas Yemm & Eliza Meek, I needed to establish that they were not the offspring of the (other) Thomas Yemm & Eliza Griffin. I had hoped the census data would establish this.

Using as an example Oliver Yemm :

Year: 1869
Month: Jan
Day: 31
Parents_Surname:YEMM
Child_Forenames:Oliver
Fathers_Forenames: Thomas
Mothers_Forenames:Eliza
Mothers_Surname:
Residence: Gibraltar
Occupation: Collier
Officiating_Minister:
S[amuel] Edwards
Event:Baptism
Memoranda:
Notes:Gibraltar is the name of a Colliery
Register_Reference:
Parish_Chapel: Viney Hill

He is not shown on the 1871 Census you posted, neither is he on the 1871 Census for Thomas Yemm & Eliza Griffin, the children for them are Sydney 8 & Thomas 2.

If you search for Oliver Yemm, you find the Oliver that I know to be the son of William Yemm & Lydia. I have full details for this family as Lydia is nee Marfell 1826/1906 my 1st cousin 4 times removed. Their Oliver was baptised 7 May 1866 Methodist Ch. Ruardean, he died 1919.

I cannot find a death for Oliver Yemm between 1867 & 1872 on Ancestry or Free BMD.

Hi Jim

Here are a few more thoughts! It might be that the Oliver in question may be shown as Thomas O on the:

1871 census
Person: YEMM, Thomas O
Address: Blakeney Hill, East Dean
YEMM, Thomas Head M 39 1832 Gloucestershire
YEMM, Eliza Wife F 28 1843 Gloucestershire
YEMM, Sydney Son M 8 1863 Gloucestershire
YEMM, Thomas O Son M 2 1869 Gloucestershire

and just called Oliver on the:

1881 census
Person: YEMM, Thomas
Address: ?, East Dean
YEMM, Thomas Head Widower M 52 1829 Coal Miner Blakeney Hill Gloucestershire
YEMM, Sydney Son Single M 18 1863 Coal Miner Blakeney Hill Gloucestershire
YEMM, Oliver Son Single M 12 1869 Scholar Blakeney Hill Gloucestershire
YEMM, Edith Daughter Single F 9 1872 Scholar Blakeney Hill Gloucestershire
MOULTON, Charlotte Servant Widow F 56 1825 Housekeeper (Dom) Blakeney Hill Gloucestershire
MOULTON, Thomas W Boarder Single M 14 1867 Coal Miner St Briavels Gloucestershire

With birth details:

Name: YEMM, Thomas Oliver
Registration District: Westbury on Severn
County: Gloucestershire
Year of Registration: 1869
Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar
Mother's Maiden Name: Not available before 1911 Q3
Volume No: 6A
Page No: 235

Here are a few other points for the puzzle!

In addition to Frank and Ernest Joseph, the FOD PRs show that Clara and Arthur YEMM also died very young. Possiblybly a factor behind the parents move to Nottingham. Although the 1911 census for Thomas 1846 & Eliza 1845 in Worksop has 'none' under the column for children born alive.

There is a 1911 census for Oliver & Sydney both born in Blakeney which you may have seen.

YEMM, Oliver
Address: Long Row Ruspidge
YEMM, Oliver Head Married M 42 1869 Coal Miner Hewer Gloucestershire Blakney
YEMM, Jane Wife Married 16 years F 43 1868 Gloucestershire Ruspidge
YEMM, Lisie Daughter F 14 1897 School Gloucestershire Ruspidge
YEMM, Albert Son M 12 1899 School Gloucestershire Ruspidge
SIMMONDS, Mary Mother In Law Widow F 81 1830 Monmouth
GURNER, Sarah Sister In Law Married F 41 1870 Char Woman Glos Ruspidge

1911 census
Person: YEMM, Sydney
Address: Viney Hill Blakeney Newnham Gloucestershire
YEMM, Sydney Head Married M 50 1861 Boot Repairer Blakeney Hill Gloucestershire
YEMM, Alice Wife Married 17 years F 50 1861 Viney Hall Gloucestershire
YEMM, Gladys Daughter Single F 15 1896 Oldcroft Gloucestershire
YEMM, Frank Son M 13 1898 School Oldcroft Gloucestershire
YEMM, Victor Son M 10 1901 School Viney Hill Gloucestershire

Best of luck, please let me know when you have it sorted!

Hi cjk136

Thanks very much for the information. I now have it sorted correctly, which is the important thing, I have deleted the 6 children I had attributed to Thomas Yemm 1846 & Eliza Meek 1845 from my Family Tree. These are obviously the children - some of whom unfortunately had very short lives - of Thomas Yemm 1829 & Eliza Griffin who are not in my Family Tree. I will be emailing the correspondent to this web site who started my enquiry to ensure she has followed this thread.

Thanks again

Jim Ashton
