Trade Directories/Surgeons (General)

by unknown, Friday, October 21, 2011, 01:54 (4779 days ago)

I am researching a "so called" surgeon Joseph Froggatt who lived in both St Briavels and Woolaston as his children were baptised in these places.

Would there be any trade directories around this time period that I could view.

We are hoping to visit the area in May/June 2012 to do some research on the family.

? Is this your Joseph, who then moved to Bristol???? and called himself Richard, there can't be too many Joseph FROGGATT - Surgeons around early 19th century.

It would be worth contacting the Royal College of Surgeons England who have a Museum/Archives etc.

Trade Directories/Surgeons

Hi Dianne,
welcome to this truly great resource(and no I'm not the founder, but experience of many many other sites from around the UK tells me that we're so lucky!).

If you have time this site contains far more than "just" a great forum and a huge database of PRs, both of which are fully searchable. Furthermore and I think really good, if you visit the Home Page from the blue button along the top of this Forum page, you'll see down the lefthand Menu theres a huge variety of subjects to peruse; old photos, documents such as newspaper clippings, old maps, legal items such as wills and inquests, etc etc etc etc; again all fully searchable from the "search" button at the bottom of that main menu. It's truly worthwhile reading thro as you may find something very personal.

On the menu you can see there's a link to the local 1879 Kelly's Trade Directory.

Furthermore this excellent website carries many more for the whole of Britain, including nineteen for Gloucestershire area alone !.
http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/index.asp

As with many such sites the search engine takes a little mastering/patience, but the Directories are there in full and entirely free of charge.

Happy Hunting !!
