Elizabeth HORNE and Thomas DRINKWATER 1699 Taynton

Thanks to this Forest of Dean website I can see that my ancestor Elizabeth Horne, widow, married Thomas Drinkwater on 15 Oct 1699 in Taynton, Glos. The daughter Susanna who is also my ancestor was born in Tibberton. My query is - can anyone advise me how I can go back from Elizabeth? If I knew her maiden name I could search for her parents - searching for a marriage to someone with the surname Horne who died before 1699 hasn't worked!

If you use the Advance Search for baptism of HORNE at Tibberton, mother's name Elizabeth

There is

Thomas: 26 May 1689 - father's name Thomas - (buried 26 October 1696, son of Thomas & Elizabeth in Woolen)

then four other's with father's name Edward - mother's name Elizabeth

Anne - 29 January 1691 - buried 26 April 1691 - daughter of Edward
Mary - 16 April 1693
Anne - 8 March 1695 -
Joyce - 20 October 1695 - ( burial records - says parents Edward & Joyce ) - 24 October 1697

? Edward HORNE married an Elizabeth

? Thomas HORNE married an Elizabeth

Burial at Tibberton 15 January 1729 - Thomas HORNE of this Parish

Christening at Taynton - 31 March 1655 Edward HORNE, parents Thomas & Anne

and again, using the Advance Search for HORNE, parents Thomas & Ann(e)

there seems to be family names, baptisms at Taynton

Thomas - 1645
Joyse - 1647

Edward - 1655

I think Edward is likely to have been Elizabeth's first husband. At least the baptisms are consistent with this interpretation as their children were born 1691-1697 and Elizabeth's second marriage was 1699. Elizabeth's last child (that I have found)of the second marriage was John baptised in 1711, 3 years after my ancestor Susanna. I think the 20 years of childbearing that this implies is reasonable.

But I am guessing that like me you have not been able to find either a record of the marriage of Elizabeth to Edward Horne, or of Edward Horne's death?

The frustrating thing for me is that I am particularly trying to trace the maternal line - and without a hint of Elizabeth's maiden name I am now unable to find her mother.

However it does look likely, as you point out from the appearance of Joyce/Joyse, that I could go back from Edward Horne at least one more generation. Though if this Edward, baptised 1655, is the right one, he was 36 when his first child was baptised. Do you think this would be reasonable?

If Edward was not working on the land, and was going up and down the Severn! - he may have been married anywhere - and just disappeared. Checked the Church of Latter Day Saints, no record there at all.

Looking at a baptism record of a Thomas Drinkwater at Taynton - 17 July 1671 - he would have been approx 28 years old when he married Elizabeth HORNE widow in 1699.

By looking at A2A - National Archives, and the Gloucestershire Archives Online Catalogue & Wills, there appears (amongst other items) to be a record of a Thomas DRINKWATER, 1673, Taynton, re: land at Pauntley.

Hello again

I have been to Glos. Archives and have a copy of the 1764 "will" of Thomas Drinkwater. I say "will" because he died intestate and what I have is the record of his two surviving daughters requesting the right to administer his estate. It's useful as it mentions their husbands and this helps me confirm this Thomas Drinkwater is the one who married Elizabeth Horne in 1699.

However, he must have been a very long-lived man for his time as the first part of this record is dated 23 January 1764. On the other hand I cannot find a burial for him around 1764. Is it possible that the daughters took some time to make their claim on his estate legal? I do not know how the process worked at that time.

Up to the Marriage Act of 1929, boys could marry at 12, girls at 14 years of age, (this age limited was fixed in 1753, before that there was no legal age of marriage) so he could have been in his 80's when he died.

I have recently downloaded the Will of a John HEWER of Meyseyhampton in Glos. from the National Archives - the Will is dated in January 1838, and John was buried 15 February 1838 in Meyseyhampton. The Will was proved in London 13 March 1839 - ten months later. He did own a lot of property, and he left instructions for 'things' to be done in the coming months with his property.

Looking at Probate Records, sometimes they seem to take years to sort out, and many birth/marriage/death records were lost - some chewed up by the 'Church Mouse'

These are also my great grandparents. Horne is Elizabeth's married name, not her birth surname. She was previously married to an Edward? Horne and was a widow at the time of her marriage to Thomas Drinkwater.

Unfortunately I don't yet know what her birth surname was....

She was born in Tibberton in 1670 and died on 1 Aug 1750

I have not been able to find out Elizabeth's maiden name. I wouldn't trust the family tree on Geni.

Would you like to tell me how you are related to Elizabeth? It would be interesting to know your line of descent. I am a maternal descendant - so strictly throught the mothers back to Eizabeth.

Just looking on Geni, they have Elizabeth's parents listed as Thomas Horne and Mary, and her death date as 3rd Aug 1728, but I understood Horne was her married name see:https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=571917.0
