Charcoal Burners. (General)

by UNCLECHARLIE @, South East Monmouthshire, Tuesday, December 27, 2011, 15:59 (4711 days ago)

I understand that my mother,because her owm mother had died, was brought up by an aunt and uncle who lived in the Mitcheldean area or even Mitcheldean itself.The period would have been about 1909-1920
Her uncle was a charcoal burner who used to spend days away from the family home tending the `burning`.As I am not entirely sure of the uncle and aunt`s full names I am enquiring if there was a register of charcoal burners archived anywhere which I might be able to view.It is possible that the family would have been from mum`s maternal family of Roberts. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

It would be very useful, to start with, if you could give names e.g. your mother's birth name and date of birth, also her mother's/father's name. This way, FOD records could be checked, along with census and other records available on line.

Thank you for your help!

The 1901 census record is actually my family.

I now need to obtain the wedding cert.This I will hopefully obtain from GRO once I have got the indexed refs.

Spoke to a very nice lady, and gave her the reference from the Gloucestershire BDM site. She then phoned me back, on a secure line for credit card details.

Excellent service.

Charcoal Burners. - ROBERTS Edward c1945

by Jefff @, West London, Middlesex, Thursday, December 29, 2011, 17:38 (4709 days ago) @ m p griffiths

This may have been mentioned in one of the prior threads...

By coincidence only last night I was once again browsing thro my newly "rediscovered" copy of "The Forest In Old Photographs" by Humphrey Phelps, there's a few photos of charcoal burners including Fred Faulkes of Flaxley c1912.
The text then states (no photo sadly);

"Edward ROBERTS of Gun's Mills was still charcoal burning with pits in Dean after the Second World War. He had also used portable metal kilns, but maintained that the old method using pits produced a better charcoal."

PS PERSONAL APPEAL !
If anyone has compiled an index of the subjects and people/place names in the numerous photos within Mr Phelps' otherwise incomparable series of books, I would happily contribute generously for a copy, please !. Thanks.
