I have two family groupings from the parish records

John Beach and Maria Skinne of Ellwood/Clowerwall married 1686 offspring

1693 Elizabeth
1695 Samuel
1698 Thomas
1701 Peter?
1703 Richard

and William Beach and Sara Worgan of Milkwall married 1719 offspring
1720 William
1723 John
1726 Samuel
1729 Benjamin
1732 Thomas
1735 JOseph

Am I correct in interpretating your posting as suggesting that William was an earlier son of John and Maria?

I also have John Beach and Maria Rosser of Clowerwall m 1709 offspring

1726 Margaret

Do your sources indicate anything about this John?

Being a Beach I gathered a lot of info in the hope that I might connect to some of these early parish enties including those in the Forest of Dean. You will see that the earliest I found are on the other side of the Forest, but there was probably a family link to the Newland / Clearwell families, and the families in the Monmouth area.

1599 - Charles Beache christened Newent 13th May son of John Beache
1601 - Guy Beache christened Newent 3rd May, son of John Beache
1616 - John Beach chr English Bicknor 23rd Dec, son of John Beach
1679 - Robert Beach christened Feb, Newnham, died June, son of Samuel Beach.

I have Isaac Beach 1827 as being the (possible) 6th child of
Benjamin Beach 1777 and Ann Morris who married in Whitchurch in 1805. Other possible offsping being

Tentatively, I've got Isaac's ancestry as

This is part of the problem Brian, there seem to be two or more people born around the same time with the same name. My Isaac baptised Dixton 1827 is the son of Benjamin Beach and Ann Parry who married in Llangarren. Ben had a cousin Ben the same age who lived half a mile away. You only have to walk across a few fields from Whitchurch to Llangarren, or up the hill to Welsh Newton where several of my family are recorded, and from there it's not far again down to Dixton or over to Garway where most lived. I thought the Ben marrying Ann Morris was mine but it was too early. There's an Isaac Beach who appears in a census out at Weston under Penyard, I wondered who he belonged too. I followed the Whitchurch Beach families but found no direct link, and there was a Beach Jarrett marriage that ended up with the children living with their grandmother Susan Beach in Monmouth. I think I might have found a link to the Newland Beach family, William Beach who married Ann Benfield in Monmouth 1766, but I seem to remember somebody shooting me down a few years ago over that marriage, so I better check it out again.

From previous messages, it appears to me that your main interest lies with the Beaches of Monmouth and any links that they may have to the Forest of Dean, rather than the FOD itself. Hope I've got that right....

You've probably seen it before but just in case, the parish records on this site list a baptism in 1797 of a Benjamin Beach (parents Samuel and Mary) taking place in Monmouth. Are these the ancestors that you have referred to?

I'm currently trying to trace the Beach descendants from Ellwood/Milkwall/Clearwell areas circa 1700. My GGGrandfather George Beach 1835 moved from Littledean to Wigan in the 1860's. I'm interested to see how far the rest of the clan spread out (or not!) and when mining stopped being the only source of work. I'm just followed the data and so far it's also led me to London, the Midlands, Yorkshire and the North East. Monmouth has been a stepping stone but I've not found anything permanent yet. Some Beaches seem to have arrived from Monmouth. I could provide a list if it would be of any interest to you.

My main resources have been this site's parish records and the censuses on FindmyPast. Like many computer systems, this imposes an artificial geographical boundary which human beings can easily cross in real life. The Welsh border being a typical example.

Also, I'm not sure what the FOD database in drawn from. Clearly the FOD, but it also has records from such diverse areas as Monmouth, Quedgely, Newent, Dymock and Dixton. How complete these are is questionable. What other resources do you use for Monmouth?

Hi Brian - The Monmouth part of the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean are so closely linked, walking distance, just like the area's along the Herefordshire border, and at the start I thought I would soon find a link, but apart from a William Beach of Newland marrying and possibly staying in Monmouth, that Samuel and Mary you mention, who married in Grosmont in 1797, are the earliest confirmed family of mine. The name is often spelt Beech. This archive of FOD parish records and neighbouring parishes is about as good as it get's, and the ones that aren't complete were simply so difficult to read due to age and damp, but people may still be working on them, so new detail may still emerge.

It looks likely that this Samuel was born in Clearwell 1801 to Samuel and Susannah Smith. They settled in Monmouth. He and his sons were carpenters
