LEADBEATER Family - James 1884 Cinderford -> Pontadawe

by Trudy miles, Thursday, July 10, 2014, 09:45 (3785 days ago) @ slowhands

hi my name is Trudy miles, previously leadbeater.I am the Daughter of llewelyn leadbeater. I believe my dads family moved from the Forest of Dean. Some moved to Swansea but my dadllewelyn moved further into the valleys to a place called Treowen, near Newbridge , Monmouthshire (as it was then I believe).I believe his mother and father were James and Ada, who you have listed under the pontadawe area. The family moved there to work in the mines. I see you have 5 children? listed but theres a few missing as she ada had 16!.

I have Leadbetter in my tree from Cinderford although my line moved to the Rhondda this could be your Swansea connection.

Sydney Leadbetter married Mary Jones Pontardawe 1919.
Sydney born 1894 in Cinderford to James Ledbetter and Ellen (Reed)married 1882 in Flaxley.
James born 1863 Cinderford father Thomas. They were colliers.

Hope this helps

Hi

Yes that sounds right,

"James born 1863 Cinderford father Thomas. They were colliers"

Do you mean that James's father was called Thomas ?

I think you have found my line here the dates are correct and i remember my grandfather mentioning the name Ellen.

Are there any further records going back that you know of ? Whats your connection with this line ?

Leadbeater Family move from the forest 1900's

James's father Thomas married Sarah Smith Flaxley 1873.
Thomas's father John married Martha Leadbetter 1856.

They are on the census 1941 - 1911 with different spellings of surname.
Most parish details are on here again with different spellings of surname.

I am not certain as yet where the connection will be on my tree but will let you know when I have found it.

John Ledbetter abt 1789 East Dean, Gloucestershire, England Head East Dean, Gloucestershire

seems to be the earliest record ?

I would like to see photos, but i got a feeling that its going to be very difficult to obtain.

Sydney LEADBEATER 1894 - 1941 Cinderford -> Pontadawe

by BSEDDON @, Monday, February 20, 2012, 17:57 (4655 days ago) @ unknown

Hi Lead

I've done quite a bit of research of the FOD Leadbeaters as I believe that James Leadbeater (or Leighbeter!) 1790-1837 was my GGGGrandfather

It's feasible that his parents were James Leighbeter & Sarah Hick (married 22/5/1793 English Bucknor) and that his siblings were

1790 James in Newnham
1793 John in Littledean
1797 Mary "
1801 Thomas "
1802 Ann "
1807 Sarah "
1809 William "

There aren't any other baptism records around at this time so this could be the start of the whole Leadbeater tribe

If you have any specifics to ask then I'll do my best to oblige Brian

If i am thinking on the correct lines my grandfather tree goes something like this.

Grandfather - Harold James Leadbeater - born in wales 1920-2003
Sydney Leadbeater born 1894 in Cinderford
James Leadbeater born 1863 Cinderford
Thomas Leadbeater abt 1835 Mitcheldean

Not sure if i got that right ?

Sydney LEADBEATER 1894 - 1941 Cinderford -> Pontadawe

by Danny @, Tuesday, February 21, 2012, 10:49 (4655 days ago) @ slowhands

Hi Brian & Lead,

A few years ago I had a go at mapping out the leadbeater clan in an attempt to pick a way thro it and also to look for clues on where they originally came from. With so much movement in the 19th C between the northern coalfields and the Forest, it was complicated. However I would offer up the following two bits of info:

1) As you already know, James Leighbeter c.1760 is the only name in the district (in the right place at the right time), so we can do no more for now than assume he is the father of James 1790 - 1837, John 1793 etc. James Leighbeter 1760 married Sarah Steele at English Bicknor on 22 May 1793, ( not Sarah Hicks as I think I found this to be a transcription error). The Steeles were an established Littledean family.

2)Thomas Leadbeater c1824, son of John and Margaret, married a Sarah ... and is the father of James 1864 and Thomas 1861. The suggested marriage of a Thomas Leadbeter and Sarah Smith in 1873 does not tie up with this, unless there is a transcription error. This is on the fringe of my own research and I have not progressed it.

regards ... Danny

Sydney LEADBEATER 1894 - 1941 Cinderford -> Pontadawe

by BSEDDON @, Tuesday, February 21, 2012, 17:15 (4654 days ago) @ Danny

Hi Danny

thanks for your input which I broadly agree with (I have Thomas 1834 rather than 1824 maybe a typo)

As you rightly point out the Thomas/Sarah Smith marriage occurs about 8 years after the births of Thomas' children and so doesn't look right, whoops!

I've had a quick census review....

1841 Thomas 7 at home with parents John & Margreet

1851 No trace of family unit

1861 Thomas 27 single at home with parents

1871 Parents dead, siblings married, Thomas off piste again

1881
LEADBEATER, Thomas Head Married M 46 1835 Coal Miner Mitcheldean
LEADBEATER, Sarah Wife Married F 43 1838 Cinderford
LEADBEATER, Thomas Son Single M 20 1861 Coal Miner
LEADBEATER, James Son Single M 17 1864 Coal Miner
HILL, Isaac Brother In Law Married M 60 1821 Coal Miner Kingswood

So, it looks like Thomas would have got married circa 1861 to a Sarah (Hill maybe), but I still can't find a marriage record anywhere

Regards Brian

There is an overwhelming amount of information on here, it all seems to stop at 1789 with John Leadbeater, not sure where to go from here.

Going forward Sydney Leadbeater had 10 children, 5 boys and 5 girls - I have a lot of info about this family.

My grandfather Harold recalls his grandfather "James Leadbeater 1863 Cinderford" being very well dressed and kind as he always let Harold hold a pocket watch, sometimes he would give him a penny.

That’s probably the oldest snippet of " describing/tale" information i have of the Leadbeater family.
