Ann DAVIS (c1814-1878) (General)

by whitecroft1946 @, Saturday, February 25, 2012, 09:51 (4651 days ago)

Ann Davis married Thomas Hawkins in St Briavels on 16th July 1834 (no details of parents). In the 1851, 61 and 71 censuses, they were living in Pillowell and had a large family; her place of birth was West Dean. She was buried at Parkend Church on 24th June 1878. So far so good.
Her stated age varied quite a bit and indicates that she was born between 1812 and 1817. This website has lots of Ann Davises baptised in this period but the most likely seems to have been baptised at Newland on 19th May 1814 with parents Thomas and Sarah from Berry Hill. Family Search shows a Mary Ann Davis baptised on 10th Jan 1813 at Coleford with parents Thomas and Ann.
I wondered if anyone had more definitive information about Ann and her parents.

Can't at yet find them on the 1841 census, although James 1834 - Elizabeth 1837 and William 1839 (on the 1851 census with them) were christened at Parkend, residence, Whitecroft.

although: Looking at the 1841 census for Pillowell (where the HAWKINS are in 1851) we have

John DOBBS - 35
Elizabeth DOBBS - 45

next door

John HAWKINS - 25 ? could this possibly and outside chance this be Thomas HAWKINS,

James HAWKINS - 6
Elizabeth HAWKINS - 3

1851 Census - Pillowell

Thomas HAWKINS 42

Thomas HAWKINS/Ann DAVIS - - Marriage 1834 - 1841 census?

I think you are correct in suggesting that the 'John' Hawkins in the 1841 census should read 'Thos' Hawkins. The location and the names and ages of the children support this and the original census document looks as though it might have been 'corrected'.
The fact that their neighbour John Dobbs was a witness at the marriage of Thomas and Ann also supports this. Thank you for pointing this out; I hadn't spotted it!
