Not sure if you already have this but when I was looking at an 1881 census for my own relatives I noticed the following transcribed as Henry S Tippins which looks like a 'P' on the actual census return:

1881 census Address: (Kings Head), Agincourt St, Monmouth

Piece: 5228 Folio: 54 Page: 25 Registration District: Monmouth

At the same time there is a younger Henry Tippings age 11 at boarding school:
1881 census Address: Well Vale School, Whitchurch (Hereford)
TIPPINGS, Henry Boarder Single M 11 1870 Scholar Wyesham Monmouthshire
Piece: 5226 Folio: 32 Page: 10 Registration District: Monmouth

Looks like he went on to study Chemistry in London along with another student studying 'brewing' chemistry:
