Looking for Grandfather Edmund Harris
Sorry about the delay in getting back to the Forum.
Thankyou Slowhands for the information about my grandfather Edmund. there is still mystery about why my father Frederick never knew him but he was only a baby when Lavinia( Knight)died and probably grew up with the Miles as his family. I am appreciative of all I have learned of my Jenkins family from Tony and the work done by the researchers. I would love to have come to the FOD. but now at 77years and my sister 80 yrs I think I'll just have to give it a miss. Thanks Evelyn

It looks like Walter Frederick is living with Edmund in 1901 - perhaps he was just too young to remember

Looking for Grandfather Edmund Harris
I'm wondering where Edmund was in the years up to his death in 1923/4. The census of 1911 shows him to be at Bucks Cottage, Stow. The Marriage to Lavinia was at Travellers Inn, Stow, Newlands in 1889.
Perhaps I might find out something about his life through the Knight Family records.
I have yet to delve into the Miles family my Dad lived with and also look at Edmund's siblings. I don't see any record of a second marriage only that Edmund died at Still House Monmouth. Can anyone tell me what this place was ?
Thankyou, Slowhands for your interest. I've never been to the FOD but I've
always wanted to know where Edmund went and why. Dad always considered himself an Orphan.

"Still House" ? I'd like to see the original to confirm the transcription of "Still", its not a name I recognise or a variant.
Instinct tells me it may have been an almshouse / poor house where he was lodging...
its unlikely to be a transcription of Jones' Almshouses Monmouth ( or Newland)

"Still" house Monmouth
Good afternoon, Slowhands, 3pm Sunday here in Christchurch New Zealand.
The research you have done is appreciated. The "Still House" reference as Edmund's Place of Death is from an earlier posting in this group. I was thinking of Hospice, Workhouse or the like. We can only wonder what his circumstances were but we can do no more than that. I'll continue to explore via the Family History Group, but I think that I have "found" Edmund, with your help. Anyone who could tell me the whys and wherefores is long gone and we will probably never know why he was so near his sons all those years and was not part of their lives. Thanks, Evelyn.

Thankyou slowhands. I looked at the map reference. It can only be a good thing to replace such institutions with something of a better standard.
i have a contact with the daughter of Edmund's elder son William . She is now 90years old but perhaps she has some memory of her fathers life prior to their emigration in 1924 abt. regards Evelyn
Looking for Grandfather Edmund Harris
It's lovely to find this information. I'm the grandson of Edmund's son William Charles Harris, who emigrated to New Zealand in around 1920, and farmed in the Waikato district. I'm in Auckland.

This seems to be the earlier generation of Edmund Charles Harris who was my Grandfather, and G.G to Earl B. Edmund Charles was a widower (died !924) I am most interested to find out about his life in FOD 1911-1924. It is thought he may have been a Pub or hotel owner or worker. Accodat
