Matthews family butchers, Hart House, Ruardean (General)
by unknown, Wednesday, February 29, 2012, 21:25 (4646 days ago)
Would be very interested to hear from any listers with information on the Matthews family butchers of Ruardean. James Matthews + wife, Elizabeth moved to Ruardean around 1871/72. James is listed as butcher of Hart House in various directories. His sons, including my grandfather, Ernest Matthews took over the business around 1908 until about 1920 ish.
Thanks

Hi Nick
My second reply today concerning the Matthews family.
As ever I have gained information from Slowhands replies. But can add to that ;
I have James Matthews 1840 Munsley & Elizabeth 1847 Linton in my Family Tree as their daughter Eva Annie Matthews 1878 married my 5th cousin twice removed Tom Brain 1878 on 6 Aug 1900 Ruardean. Tom Brain 1878 was the son of James Brain 1847 & Fanny Hatton 1850, married 10 Aug 1873. Interesting divertion to note that James Brain 1847 was the son of James Brain 1816 & Ann Matthews 1817.
Going back to James Brain 1847 & Fanny Hatton 1850, apart from Tom 1878 they had another 3 children including Minnie Maria Brain 1875 who married my half 2nd cousin 3 times removed John Marfell 1875, they had 6 children including Orlando John Marfell 1901 who married ..........Marjorie Fanny Brain 1908 - daughter of Tom Brain 1878 & Eva Annie Matthews, daughter of James Matthews 1840 & Elizabeth where we came in.
I have today sent off a picture of John Brain & Minnie Maria Marfell and their 6 children, taken on the back lawn of Euroclydon, a well known landmark house built by Thomas Bennett Brain, with a large tower, so that he could see if his Trafalgar Mine was in production.
I also have a small picture of Marjorie Fanny Brain, that I can email to you, if you wish, together with her marriage certificate to Orlando John Marfell. To do this, send me an email by clicking on to the envelope next to my name.

Hi Mark
Orlando John Marfell was indeed a car (person) and is almost certainly the person concerned. Interesting that my reply was initially rejected due to the word XXXXman !!!!
I exchanged information regarding Orlando John Marfell and Marjorie (Maggie) Fanny Brain with a person in Atlanta Georgia. He too had the picture of the Marfell family on the back lawn of Euroclydon (posted on this web site), although he admitted not as good quality as mine !!
It was from him that I learned of the removal of Orlando John's remains from Cheltenham to the Brain Family Vault in the Forest Church Drybrook,to be with Maggie.
The contact is the son of Orlando's sister Veronica Marfell and Leonard Hide.
He would be a good point of contact that you are seeking.
I never disclose email addresses to others without their permission, so I will send an email to the 2005 address I have with a link to this posting. He may reply to me, in which case I will let you know or he may respond to this posting.

I can tell you about Barbara May Robinson as she was a Marfell, I have the BMD records of all Marfell's after registration commenced in 1837. Barbara May was born 1905 Chepstow, baptised 11 Jun 1905 Lydney. Married Norman Roper Robinson, son of James Robinson born March qtr 1897 Ulverston 8e 826. They married on 19 March 1928 Forest Church, Drybrook. Norman was a widow on his maariage to Barbara. His father was deceased before 1928.
Barbara May Marfell was the daughter of John Marfell 1871/1942 and Minnie Maria Brain 1875/1959. She is the sister of Orlando John Marfell and Veronica Marfell mentioned in previous postings on this thread and is pictured on the photo also mentioned. Her brother Raymand James Marfell was one of the 3 witnesses at her marriage.
Barbara moved to Keswick in 1927 and ultimately became Mayor of that town. She died 4 July 1979 Cheltenham buried 9 Jul 1979 Cheltenham Cremation.
Barbara May Marfell would be my half 3rd cousin twice removed. Her father John Marfell was my half 2nd cousin 3 times removed, the half due to the fact that his direct line goes to his great grandfather John Marfell 1769, who was one of my Great Great Great Great Grandfathers - who married twice. Barbara May's mother Minnie Maria Brain was also related to me before her marriage, being my 5th cousin twice removed.
I have not heard from the contact I mentioned in my previous posting. If no news is received, I would suggest that a good home for the information you mentioned would be Terry Marfell, who is the point of contact for the One Name Study, for the Marfell family, he holds thousands of records for the Marfell Family, many of which he has shared with me. I can contact him and arrange for him to contact you direct if you wish.

I've come across the Name Norman Roper Robinson in my research too. He married Elizabeth May Gunter in 1925, but a year later she died in childbirth (in Keswick). Elizabeth is buried in Parkend churchyard and NRP's name is mentioned on the gravestone.
There's no mention of the baby on the gravestone and I don't know if it survived. I was wondering if you might?

My main interest is the Marfell family and my only real interest in this thread is that Barbara May Marfell married Norman Roper Robinson. I knew that Norman was a widower when he married Barbara May Marfell but had no details of his former marriage. I have now added his first wife's name and death, so thank you for that information that I have added to my Family Tree as a connection.
I have no information about the child whose birth caused the death of Elizabeth Gunter but a quick check on Free BMD shows a David Robinson died in Cockermouth aged 0 in 1926. This could be the child, however the next obvious move a search of Robinson births in 1925/1926 reveals a Philip R Robinson born Cockermouth mother surname Gunter !!!!!
A mystery for you I think, but not alas any concern of mine. Good luck
