If you were adopted or fostered you can ask your local authority for assistance on this. Or you could try the British Association for Fostering and Adoption's website set up for this purpose: www.baaf.org.uk (I think they have a sub-web site on it adoptionsearchreunion.org.uk but you need to check this out). I might be wrong but I think you need to be 18 years or older to be able to request that contact is made if possible, if the parent can be traced then they have a right to decide whether they wish to agree to making contact and it's usually done by a letter. You could also request to see your file: - the local authority can decide whether parts of it can be shown and shared and whether other parts have to remain confidential.(Usually the confidential material is where there are third parties involved who cannot be named).
If your mother just left and there wasn't any formal fostering or adoption then you might have a harder task if no one knows where she went or whether she re-married.
