thank you Slowhands
bertha Baldwin was one that stood out but you have made the connection
thanks again and I will be back very soon
I only got to page 47
great reading
the Evans family
Hi Roger
I have a hundred or so Evans in my Family Tree so decided to look at this thread. I do however have 466 Baldwins and this made it more interesting. Until following Slowhands (as usual) superb response I only had Bertha Baldwin 22 Jun 1891, daughter of John Baldwin 1849 & Elizabeth Greening 1848 - married 14 Aug 1870 Cinderford in my Family Tree, but have now entered Slowhands details and find (or rather my PC finds) that you are my 6th cousin.
I have a lot of details for your Baldwin ancestors, which you might already know. If you go back 3 generations from John Baldwin 1849 you get to Richard Baldwin 1744 & Sarah Herbert 1748. I have strived for years to find details of the ancestors of Richard Baldwin 1744 without success, but can trace Sarah Herbert 1748 back a further 4 generations to one of my 8 times Great Grandparents David Herbert & Alice.
If you email me by clicking on the envelope icon, I can provide you with details if you wish.

thats about as far as I had got nothing on any of the census he will just have to go down as "father unknown" for now
I might at a later date go through the military records for that time if there are any
thanks for that slowhands
John BALDWIN 1849 Ruardean Hill
Slowhands is right as usual, the parents of Mary Baldwin 1825, mother of the illegitimate John Baldwin 1849, were indeed William Baldwin 1779/1863 & Hannah Bailey 1789/1863 - married 8 Oct 1816.
Three items of interest here; firstly they were living apart in 1861 :
1861 Census East Dean RG9 1754 236
William Baldwin mar 81 Lab East Dean
1861 Census East Dean
Mary Baldwin head unmarried 39 Char Woman East Dean
John son 12 East Dean
Abraham son 10 East Dean
Ephraim son 3 East Dean
Hannah Baldwin Lodgers mother 70
1841 Census Dean Forest
Wm Baldwin b 1785
Hannah b 1791
James b 1819
Mary b 1825
Nehemiah b 1825
Elisha born1830
Peter b 1828
Timothy b 1832
The 1851 Census included in Slowhands posting, shows William as a Coal Miner. However another researcher has given me this information :
In 1842/3 William Baldwin, a shopkeeper (63), of Ruardean brought an action against the vicar, Rev. Henry Formby, for extending the churchyard and in doing so exposing the bones of his parents Richard and Sarah and of his brother Richard. He must have lost his case because costs of £6.16.8 were awarded against him.
It is possible that he could have been a shopkeeper in 1842, before becoming a Coal Miner at aged 70 in 1851, it casts some doubt. The parents quoted are those that I have for him Richard Baldwin & Sarah Herbert 1744/1816 1748/1813. Also William Baldwin did indeed have a brother Richard 1774/1840, so his grave could be one to be disturbed.
The baptism I have for him is shown below, together with the 3rd intesting item I have for him, the fact that William & Hannah Baldwin died on the same day 1st Jan 1863 and were buried on the same day. The gap between the two events, leads you to think of suspicious circumstances :

Mary Baldwin 1825 had 2 other illegitimate children, who are to be found in the various census :
James Abraham 1851 & Ephraim 1858, the latter was baptised 28 Mar 1858, but cannot find James Abraham, which may be due to changing names; shown James 1851, Abraham 1861
Lastly I make no excuses for appealing again for information concerning the parents of Richard Baldwin 1744

Roger
It is rare to have such a nice day, so I will not be on line for long. But for continuity of the thread, and possible assistance from Slowhands !!
Thank you for your email, although I do have Ancestry membership I could not seem to get into your Public Access Bertha Baldwin 1891 Tree. Noting a few trees based upon this person, I looked at them and it has caused me to rethink my line here. I now believe that the William Baldwin who married Hannah Bailey was in fact William Baldwin baptised 16 Oct 1791, son of Charles Baldwin 1755 & Elizabeth Dovey 1759. The Ancestry tree's attribute the William Baldwin who married Hannah Bailey as being the son of Charles Baldwin 1737 & Betty, but I believe this is missing a generation. Charles Baldwin 1755 I mention above is the son of Charles Baldwin 1737 & Betty.
Another factor which causes me to believe this, is that one witness of the wedding between William Baldwin & Hannah Bailey was Winifred Baldwin. William Baldwin 1791, son of Chales Baldwin & Elizabeth Dovey, had a sister Winifred. The other witness was Charles Baldwin and he had a father and brother Charles.
I did note the deaths of William Baldwin & Hannah Baldwin nee Bailey from posted death certificates did occur on the same day but 21st January 1863, not as I previously said 1st January.
Always wishing to be as accurate as possible, I will - but not today and waste the sun - amend my tree as above.
