As the Olympic Games are at the forefront of our attention now, I was wondering if there were any Forest of Dean people who made it to any of the Olympic games as competitors?

Dunno about current Foresters but Michael Phelps is sure to have Forest genes. A quick squint at Wikipedia confirms that his ancestry includes English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, and German!

Vicky Holland (triathlon) grewup in Redmarley and attended Newent School.

Not true Foresters by birth but Charlotte Dujardin in the Gold winning Equestrian team is based at team-mate Carl Hester's Oaklebrook Mill yard near Newent, as per Slowhand's post. She moved there five years ago to do work experience and didnt leave, she owns a house in Upleadon.

(Nailsworth seems to be the Centre of North Glostershire Excellence boasting rowers and a marathon runner in recent years).

Thanks for this, I expect that Newent will be having a postbox painted gold for the dressage champion!

Re our local Olympian's from more distant past, I've struggled to find records that quote placenames or even counties rather than just GB, it's fun looking tho. More to come I hope..

Andy Murray's wasn't the only postbox which had to be repainted. Jessica Ennis' pillar box was painted gold soon after the medal was won but it was vandalised with graffiti the next day. Two days later it was repainted gold and there was also found to be damage to the door too.
